I wonder if that is an early example of a vanity plate. The car is apparently fitted with the bumper widening plate used to extend the early batch of bumpers which were in production before the extra four inches was added to the width of the vehicles and the low headlamp position was abandoned in "early 1951". |

Maybe indeed. High headlights was Jan 51 on 2-door, PPF plates started March 51 so otherwise this becomes obsolete showroom stock. Let's go with the bumper plate as you mention. |

Wikipedia says that high headlights were fitted to all Minors from the beginning of 1951, citing as its source a 1950 Autocar road test. |

Glass's has 4-door with high lights from Oct 50 introduction (so no 4 door lowlights existed) with 2 door and Tourer adopting the change in Jan 51 (although US-bound cars had them from Oct 49). Then in March 51 everything got painted grille instead of chromed. |

1949 Introduction with two part bumpers. March 1951 All cars now with one-piece bumpers also painted grille and hubcaps following nickel shortage. Early 1951 looks right to me. October 1951 All Minors now have 7" headlamps in the wings and sidelights in the front panel plus separate rear reflectors. The other date feature was two wipers from Oct 50. Difficult to be definite, but enlarging the DVD footage seems to show 2. So an Oct 50 to Jan or March 51 (according to source) car with a Surrey plate issued March to Oct 51. |
