That is one weird looking ambulance - I don't have an idea what it is other than it's appeared before here - but it's not a Bedford I'm fairly certain. /vehicle_32619-Bedford-J1.html |

Ian Alton on the Ambulance Preservation forum.... (Probably a) Dennis FD4. A VERY rare ambulance that was built using the best of parts, ie a gutsy Jaguar 6 cylinder engine for smooth effortless power, Transit / taxi steering for excellent turning circle etc. A couple of these vehicles survive in preservation but its about as rare as an ambulance gets nowadays! I try to find will out more. -- Last edit: 2007-04-07 19:56:39 |

Now I'm 100% It is a Dennis FD4 which Surrey Ambulance service / Rutland Ambulance service used examples of so they may be able to help with more info. Dennis Bros built the vehicles at their works in Guildford. The first prototype was donated to Kingston upon Thames St John Ambulance (reg was EPH 225J)and was later sold to Bletchley Ambulance. There were two prototypes built. The earliest example was registered WPG 174G. GFP 621H was another Dennis FD4 that ended up scrapped after an extensive accident. Searching those reg numbers on the DVLA site would be a quick way if seeing if the other two survive. Regards Ian |

Thanks Ian. ![]() The Bletchley prototype is the only one listed on DVLA but probably does not survive. The others that you mentioned and SJA 374J which is possibly the The Sweeny vehicle are not listed. The vehicle details for EPH 225J are: Date of Liability 06 09 1978 Date of First Registration 01 02 1971 Year of Manufacture Not Available Cylinder Capacity (cc) Not Available CO2 Emissions Not Available Fuel Type Petrol Export Marker Not Applicable Vehicle Status Unlicensed Vehicle Colour WHITE -- Last edit: 2007-04-07 20:49:34 |

As amember of St John Ambulance in the 1970s, I drove the Dennis and one of the Transits used in The Sweeney. Our pet name for the Dennis was 'The Pig'as it was a real handfull. It had a 2.8 litre Jaguar engine driving the front wheels. As it was a heavy vehicle it was way underpowered and very noisy, the automatic transmission clanging on kickdown. |
