I've seen this movie several times and I've always wondered about the lump on the roof of this Rolls Royce. It seems almost like some type of sunroof, but seems to have the wrong orientation. Usually the sun roof is width wise opening to the two front seats. This one seems to go lengthwise and would open for the front and back passenger. Can anybody confirm this is some kind of sunroof or does it have a completely different purpose? I tried snapping a picture from my television to highlight the roof detail.

That is weird - they don't normally make them like that. Might explain why it got a vinyl roof - to hide the traces of the adaptation as fairly sure it would never have left the factory with it.

Is there any sequence in the film which looks as if filmed from the roof of the Shadow?? As - assuming the plate is correct - it was 10 years old at filming, it might have been a clunker which was butchered as a camera car?? Does it look onscreen like a fabric (sun)roof or a more solid insert/cover made of eg plastic or metal??

A reconsideration: 1st thumb with the SM looks clearly full width and main looks full or nearly full length, while your TV screen capture appears to show half-width so either (a) 2 cars, one with a very strange roof or (b) your screen capture is somehow wrong. Looking at that closely, maybe there is an odd effect - right side of car in shade, left side in sun - see the different shading on the bonnet pretty well along the centreline. So maybe the sunny side is not showing the raised roof because the brightness is "flattening" it but in reality it's there.

So one car with a full width and full-ish length raised centre panel. Which is still strange, but maybe a full cover for a sunroof. If I remember rightly (which is not guaranteed), sunroof Shadows usually had a steel slot sunroof over front seats only which sat flush with roof, not raised. So if this conceals a fuller length fabric roof, it's very much a one-off modification, and maybe caused structural weakness/body shake so needed a solid cover for rigidity. My best guess on the evidence available .....

Looks like two cars. The one with the latitudinal lump could be a special slot for filming covered to look like the longitudinal one with a legit sunroof.

I can confirm the screen capture is correct because that roof line was something that bothered mesince I first saw this movie as a kid long before the Internet. I never thought of the two car idea but that would likely explain why it was difficult to capture the odd roof in any other shots. About 10 min later in the movie than the screen capture was taken, what is supposed to be the same car is driven to a mail drop in Piccadilly Circus. Ever so briefly, you can catch a glimpse of a sunroof, but over the driver where it should be, as they show interior shots of the car being driven.

Also later in the movie there is a bridge chase scene where they obviously use 2 different cars. A suped up Yellow Ford Capri for the chase shot and then a different base model Capri destroyed in the crash. I'd still love to know what going on for sure with that Rolls. I wonder if the studio ever did a behind the scenes promotional video that were common for films of this time. It should be included on the DVD if it exists, and might clear everything up.

This Silver Shadow has a Webasto sunroof, with was folding roof cover, sliding open, made of cloth. Sliding steel sunroofs on these are fairly rare, and also built in by external suppliers. Reason for their popularity is that up to circa 1969 airconditioning (RR called it refrigeration) was not a standard fitting, but a quite expensive option...

Definitely a strange sunroof here

- full-length but half-width, only on passenger side.

I think the light is playing tricks - in that shot from above you can actually see the other side of the webasto on the right; it's just been pictured half in the sunlight so you can't see much of a shadow.
