619 CLW = London issue, June 61 to July 63 "allocated in blocks", and has early bonnet handle which I think disappeared after 1962. Described as testing a new experimental hydrostatic transmission which could transform cars of the future. Looks more like a technical university than a factory, and I wouldn't expect Triumph to use a car with London plates or have a car park full of pretty well everything except Triumphs. So who in 1967 was trying to develop this?? |

Found a 4-minute Pathe news clip of 619 CLW called "The Gearless Car - Glasgow 1962", probably at an earlier stage of development - Link to "www.britishpathe.com" , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYthGukcqB0 - 'A motor car without clutch or gear box - hydrostatic transmission system installed by the National Engineering Laboratory....... a Triumph Herald which has been fitted with the transmission system on the operation of one pedal can be driven at varying speeds stopped and reversed, merely by movement of the foot lever (gearless).'. Sadly no spoken commentary. |
