closest would be Expedition but the rear is definetely wrong..

All kinds of wrong. It's like it wearing a rubber wrap that's covering the truck from the b-pillar rearwards. You cant open the rear side door. You can see the real part of the truck in the corner of the rear side glass. Look how the rear hatch's corners are square which awkwardly meet the round taillamps. :(/

An unknown white car ? Looks a bit like a wagon, but with non functioning rear doors ? That reminds me of something...

Also, same vehicle can be partially seen in this deleted scene from ep 6.18:

Is what I think too. Maybe a mock up for a motor show?

Didn't this series carry Ford product placement? Maybe they loaned them this mock-up car? My only doubt is this episode was from 1999, a couple of years after the Expedition launched so not really a new model.

Baube QC

2015-10-28 15:14

and its too short to be an Excursion, unless they tried to disguise an Expedition as one ( and not really a good result... ). Could this be a " study-vehicle" that they would have used to create the Expedition ? ( yeah, kind of joining rtsbusman's idea of a prototype... )

Couldn't this be a 1997 F-150 with custom rear body? Aren't those F-150 tail lights, mirrors, handles etc?

Maybe a mid-90s Bronco prototype?

I think jettalover's explanation is right.

These kinds of wrap are widely used in the UK for all-over advertisements on buses and trains. The film crew had a wrap printed with the police markings, and the people applying the wrap failed to cut through it to allow the doors to open.

Isn't this just an Expedition with a graphic wrap obscuring some details?

Sandie SX

Not convinced: http://www.carid.com/images/fey/ford-expedition-perfect-match-100f.jpg

Wrap wouldn't explain the difference in taillights (Expedition has them ribbed into three sections) and how the glass on the rear is opaque and not divided on the rear door. Bumper seems wrong now that I think of it.

My feeling is that MisterZ has got it right and it's a modified F-150, I prefer to let someone like Ford Guy or Neptune look at this with their more specific knowledge before acting on my feeling.

That's why I think it's a prototype of sorts. There's no way the truck has a bed because the rear and the cab are way too close to be safe. My personal guess is was a 1995/1996 prototype that Ford provided (see the brand new 1998/1999 Crown Victorias in the same scene) because many Ford Expedition prototypes did use parts from the E-Series brand of trucks. Also look haw half-assed the taillights were attached to the rear with the plastic bits needed to keep the taillight on.

I agree. It could be a style mockup of an Expedition using an F-150 with various added bits, like a rear hatch and a roof extension made of fiberglass and polyester.

I watched the episode on Netflix and all I can confirm is that it's Ford-based. It's crude looks, combined with the LA filming location, leads me to believe that this isn't a Ford prototype but some sort of one-off creation, perhaps from a prop vehicle company. A bit similar to the Econolines with the 2008+ front ends that we see today.

That would be quite odd since they could have just gotten a new explorer like the Crown Vics. Does this truck serve a purpose, because the screenshots from various episodes makes this out to be a simple truck.

Well they do a lot of weird things with vehicles sometimes so we can't really count on them to always do what "makes sense" to us. It is just a background vehicle that doesn't get damaged in any way.

So how should this be named?

Ford Expedition Mock-up?

Ford_Guy US

2015-11-12 20:10

If you really want to give it a name, then yes. We can default to 1997 as the first possible model year.

It must be a prototype 1997 expedition, it has expedition door handles and expedition tailgate handle. The rear bumper and taillights are the same as on an F-150. Expeditions of this year have the same 5 lug base steel rim as the F150(Excusions are 8 lug). Differences between this vehicle and a proper production model are the shape of the tailgate at window height, and the rib line running around the belt line of the vehicle. Also missing on this vehicle are the black inserts between the three rearmost pieces of glass.

It's probable that this vehicle had prototype taillights that were discarded due to not being DOT certified(I know of the same happening with rims on some GM prototypes of the same era), and F150 taillights fit. The spots really just look like velcro for tinted light covers, which might be "used" parts from an actual F150 prototype themselves. Alternatively, custom tint covers may have been used on originally installed F150 taillights to hide their ill fit, but they were discarded either because they looked wrong on a police vehicle, or by ford prior to lending out the vehicle due to DOT concerns.

The door line is actually there, but the door is slightly recessed(due to ill fit?) compared to the panel, so you can't see the line in the pictures properly, look very closely near the bottom and there is a slight line.

Notice in the background there are blast barricades on the buildings on the right side of the street. lol

I'll state that this must have been a design body mule for a 1997 ford expedition as the body still needs significant tweaks compared to production models.

No. The rear window, hatch and all kinds of things aren't shaped right. The body lines are all off and it has F-150 tailights. This things is all kinds of weird.

I think I have an Idea what it is...

All films and TV used backup cars in situations such as explosions, crashes etc as the cars they use may belong to the manufacturer or a fleet. And most of the time you can tell it's a different car than the one it's supposed to be. This could be a half-hearted attempt at making a dummy car ( An older vehicle with bits/stickers slapped on to make it look like something else in order to improve continuity and cut costs)
