Iron Maggie, God rest her soul, did nothing to subsidise any industry at the time, being thoroughly wedded to market economies, which are fine if you are at the front of the queue. I was referring to the fact that Frau Merkel is unlikely to crave sterling as a currency, whereas the Reichsmark was exchangeable mainly for other Reichsmarks. |

Well, if the Scotsmen have to hear more comments like it's not unlikely, that they would like to join the €-world and trash the Sterling. The last try failed, but it's unlikely, that they give up. They don't since 1707, why should they do it now? |

According to Glass's, a small 1937 Opel in UK would be Cadet [234 before March 37; 3300 afterwards] or Olympia Eleven [237]. But information is sketchy. |

My group of friends and I are heartily sick of Celtish whingeing and are united in our wish to see all of them gone and unable to influence English politics. It is a great pity that English nationalism has attracted nut cases and racists, since it means that anyone trying to put forward the case for an independent England becomes branded as a fascist or worse. Nobody is fighting for the residents of the English shires, ask any dairy farmer or person whose home is blighted by the threat of the useless white elephant HS2. The only alternative to an Opel is a Renault, with that location of the headlights, but I think there were fewer of those as they were not sold at advantageous prices, and this does not look right for that car. -- Last edit: 2015-10-21 19:53:29 |

@jfs Now it's edited, there are some sentiments I can agree with about no-one fighting for the English shires - the real underlying problem in my eyes is that the UK is being governed primarily for the benefit of London and the Southeast and has been by all sides since the end of the 70s. The "Celtish whinging" is not necessarily different in root cause from many of the English shire problems. And if HS2 is meant as a genuine balancing exercise, start work in the north at the same time as the bits that will just feed London's gargantuan appetite. My deeper wish is for a federalist UK of partner states with a much greater balance of power, opportunity and co-operation across the whole consortium, but if the only option Scotland is offered is acrimonious separation, then so be it. @ingo Don't assume that the Scottish separatist movement is fuelled by enthusiasm for the €, especially after we've seen how Greece is treated when things go wrong. There are big question marks about what currency an independent Scotland might use which were not resolved in the referendum debates. And there has not yet been a real discussion in Scotland about what type of relationship with the EU would be the most appropriate. If all we end up doing is swapping the Westminster handcuffs for a Brussels straitjacket, then it's doubtful if anything really useful would be achieved. |
