this nova's roof has been chopped, and it looks like it has custom tailights and a rear bumper from a camaro, the bumpers aren't stock bumpers, the grille isn't original either. |

Oldsmobile, Buick and Pontiac had similar Nova based cars. Taillights look Pontiac Ventura. Can't be certain. Buick made the Apollo. Oldsmobile had the Omega. |

When I watched the movie I did not replace the main pic because I thought it was good enough, but you can exchange main pic and comments pic if you think it is better... |

I just wanted to clear up a few inaccurate comments made. I am the owner of the 1973 Nova (not 1971) as seen in these pictures. I owned the car at the time Carlito's Way was filmed and still own it. I purchased the car in Carlisle, PA, in 1992. I live on Long Island and not NJ as mentioned in a previous comment. I answered an ad in Newsday and my Nova was selected for the movie. I appreciate the great photos shown on this site. If anyone is interested in learning more about the car as some of the descriptions above are incorrect, please let me know. The car has given me many years of enjoyment, entering the car in car shows and just cruising. I currently don't use the car as much and am interested in selling it to someone who would appreciate and enjoy it. My email address is classicsaba@hotmail.com. |

About 5years ago back in 2001 I found the car on EBay some guy in New Jersey had it posted I bid on it up to 10k he. I talked to him he said he would only sell it for 15k I didn’t have the money at the time plus I all ready had a 1969 Nova and actually the car in the movie first made me fall in love with the Chevy Nova body style it was a Miracle I found the original on eBay after about one year of owning my nova which I bought for 25k I was soooo mad that I couldn’t afford to buy my dream car the car that previous to buying mine I rewind the DVD of the movie like a million times to figure out what that car was so after doing research I found out that the closes body style was the 69 nova and don’t forget this is flipping thru tons of pictures online to get my answer so then My nova popped up on eBay it was show quality I drove all the way from Chicago to Tennessee to pick it up. I wish I would have talked to the guy in Jersey earlier he actually send me like 20 pictures of inside out of the car. It looked ok not show quality but shit I would of loved to buy it anyoneeeee with info regarding the car please email it to me Qstrz@yahoo.com I will even pay a finder’s fee $$$$ |

I believe the car was painted by Lenny Smith from Kolorcraft in Syracuse NY, and I believe Tom from T&R collision also of Syracuse did the chop on the top. |

UPDATE May 1, 2012: My name is Gavin Snyder and I am the current owner of this vehicle. The car in the photo was a 1973 Nova built by my father Randy Snyder who was a well known, regional and national award winning custom car and custom motorcycle builder based out of Syracuse New York. At the time he built the car, he was working at T&R Custom Collision in Syracuse New York. Randy passed away from cancer in 2001. I ll clear up some facts that are wrong in this post. Randy Snyder built the car for original owner Rick Benz in 1983-84. It was built and customized by Randy who did all the fabrication, chopped top and original paint. The car was originally black cherry with candy red scallops. I will soon be launching a website with all past photos, fabrication, prior color schemes (of which there were three before the flame scheme shown) and I ll post the complete history of this car. Owner Rick Benz subsequently had the car repainted in the current flame job by Lenny Smith. Owner Rick Benz sprayed the candy tangerine orange base and Lenny painted the flames. The car has changed hands many times since Ricks original ownership. Rick Benz sold the car in the late 1980s to Rick Ivancheck who then sold it to Davey Jackowski, owner of D&D Specialties, a street rod shop in East Syracuse, New York. At the Carlisle auto show in 1992, Davey sold the Nova to Otto who has posted above on this page. Otto answered an ad in newsweek and got the car into Carlitos Way with Al Pacino. Ottos son and I were subsequently in touch when Otto sold the car to an individual who later sold it on Barrett Jackson auto auction on the SPEED Channel. I had hoped to buy the car back from Otto but was unable to at the time. It then came up for sale on Ebay and a buyer in Norway (who I now consider a friend of mine) purchased the car. After the buyer in Norway had it shipped there, he found that he could not register the vehicle and contacted me to ask if I was interested in buying it back. I was vying for the car against another gentleman who was interested from Canada. The Norwegian owner decided since my father built the car, that it should be sold to me and should come back home to Syracuse. My family and I completed the purchase and the car was shipped over many months in the spring of 2011 from Oslo Norway to Bremmerhaven Germany and then to the Port of New York. From there it was trailered to my home in Upstate New York. The car is still driven daily in the summer and is accasionally shown in autoshows including the 2011 Syracuse Nationals Street Rod Show, where the car is now featured on their photo page at SyracuseNationals.com. Some history of the details: Tailights are dark maroon plexi with honeycomb backing. Original Nova tailight vertical center bar is removed. Most chrome trim on the car was removed or painted to match. Stock bumpers were removed and replaced with camaro bumpers, hood is louvered, front and rear valences are handmade/hand rolled steel, front directionals and valence are from a 1971 Dodge Challenger and are hand fitted, headlights are late model chevy van headlamps. The top of the car was chopped and lowered 4 and the back and side glass is original uncut with the rear glass laid flat. All door handles were removed. Drivers door had a solonoid but all have now been replaced with elecronics and remote. Prior to the movie, the car originally featured a radically built, 400+HP V8, 4-spd manual but now has a Chevy smallblock V8, 3 speed auto trans and tuned Port Injection. I am glad to see the car was brought back to Syracuse. My father is Rick Benz. I remember always remember wanting this car as a kid. Maybe some years down the road, I will be able to offer some money to buy it from you. |
