I think these Escorts would be a very likely topic for the imcdb Xmas exam, so study these histories carefully .... Ford entered 4 brand new works Escort RS 1800s with 2-litre BDA engines and consecutive VIN numbers, each registered 01 March 1977 in sequence STW 200R to 203R and presented in Rothmans livery. They were all "heavyweight" shells with 200R being RHD and the other 3 LHD.

- STW 200R, #2 Roger Clark/Jim Porter, retired very early with water pump failure; stayed in works fleet thru to 78 with some results eg 4th on 1977 RAC and winner of 1978 Cyprus (both Clark), then sold to David Sutton who rebuilt/reshelled it as SJN 830R which won the 78 RAC (Mikkola). A new lightweight tarmac spec car was built by Ford in 78 and received the STW 200R plate and its original VIN number - there was a factory strike so Boreham were officially prevented from building new cars, and got round it by recycling identities. It was used in various national events in UK and Europe by various drivers in rest of 78 and then by Billy Coleman for Ford (Cork) in 79 Irish championship. So there were 2 different works Escorts with STW 200R plates and VIN number.
- STW 201R, #1 Bjorn Waldegaard/Hans Thorzelius, winners. Only used on this event, its success meant retained as a show car for Ford Heritage Collection. But someone then decided to repaint and relivery it as WTW 567S Waldegaard's winning car on 77 RAC, in which form it stayed in the collection until mid-2000s until a TV journalist (no idea who, unfortunately) rolled it on camera and wrote it off. Ford rebuilt the remains into a new shell, thereby destroying any remaining authenticity, and put it back in the collection. However they sold off the knackered shell, and it was rebuilt into a completely new and painstaking replica of the Safari winner. So the surviving Ford collection "1977 RAC rally winner" was not the actual 77 RAC winner but used to be the 77 Safari winner, and the apparent 77 Safari winner is a replica, but a very good one. And to complicate things further, Ford repeated their strike-breaking 200R trick and created a new car in 78 with STW 201R plates and recycled VIN number, which ran in various 78-79 events including a victory in 79 Cyprus rally for Mikkola.
- STW 202R, #14 Ari Vatanen/Atso Aho, retired mid-rally ignition failure after leading. After the 77 EAS it stayed in the works fleet and ran on several 77-78 events without success before being sold on late 78.
- STW 203R, #18 Vic Preston Jnr/John Lyall, retired from secure 2nd place near end when clutch exploded. Sold straight afterwards to Preston and no further info except it stayed in Africa.

Lots of footage below reused elsewhere - eg Escort pages in /movie_1004509820-Greatest-Years-of-Rallying--1970s.html , etc

Also worth adding these captures from the youtube mash-up (see main film page comments that these were probably part of the full film)

- this sequence and published photos from it are often mis-described as showing how flooded the rally was, but in fact are Roger Clark in pre-event testing on a lakeside beach to check the car was waterproof - note there's no co-driver

2] STW 201R Waldegaard [RIP] was my favourite rally driver in the 70s for his exploits in Porsche 911s and then the Stratos - I was a marshal on 75 RAC Rally and still remember him going full pelt through ford watersplash in the Stratos without its rear bodywork on Sutton Park stage. I tried to take a photo with my trusty Kodak Instamatic, but failed abysmally ...

5] .... and there's still more from the youtube mashup - fairly sure this red something with white roof is a competing Escort Mk2 seen in 2 sequences - given the (lack of) quality, you might have to trust me on this, or watch the clip and decide ...

There were 2 non-works Escorts entered in 77 EAS - #32 Pyara S Bhachu/Nirmal S Bhachu (just listed as Escort), and #66 Frank G Songol/Joel K Chebelyon (listed as RS 1600 so if correct = Mk1 and not the one shown). Both retired.

6].... and finally some recce/testing footage from the youtube mashup - a plain white Mk2 RS 1800 with huge steroid-enhanced arches and a normal body RS 2000 Mk2 with sloping front. Not sure which car gives the interior

A legendary test of indepth knowledge of obscure information buried deep in imcdb entries ..... We haven't actually had one yet, but it could happen one day. Perhaps one year in the summer ......

A nice set of all 4 works cars in 1:43 (sold by Scala, based on Trofeu model which has some basic shape errors - but lined up like this it looks a great set)
Released in 2010 in an edition of 100, sold out in 5 minutes and now impossible to find at prices below the annual GDP of a small European country. But I want one ....
