Is this one really a "720" as it is listed? I do not find much info about a similar car with this name, when searching for its W-code...

I also noticed there's a second one later on in the Nazi base at the end:

I think I may have finally found out that they were in fact attempting to replicate an actual 1936 Mercedes vehicle with this thing:

The basic shape of it plus the Mercedes hood ornament are too much of a coincidence to overlook. It's even got the driver's-side-only windshield wiper! Although this body type appears to have been more used by Horch, it seems Mercedes did in fact make cars like this in the 30's, the Mercedes-Benz G5. So I am now listing it (and the others) as "Made-for-Movie Mercedes G5."

Model used for the cliff scene:

Why didn't the crew just try to find a German Truck like the Steyr or the Krupp Protze?, they could have just used a Volkswagen Kubel too if they were hard pressed.

Historical accurateness is definetely the last thing, you can expect in these movies :o In the late 30ies there were also no German soldiers in Northern Africa - so no khaki-coloured uniforms and khaki-coloured vehicles. And the burning of books, a scene, which appears too, was in 1933/34, not later. And since 1937 there was no Zeppelin-traffic any more. If we will dig for more goofs and anachronisms, we will find many more. ;)

Nice, entertaining popcorn-cinema - but lightyears away from any historical correctness.

Well, considering the backdrop of the movie's plot, you can say that the anachronisms were done on purpose.

While your point still stands, that and the zeppelin were in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, not Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Anyway the reason they used a mockup as opposed to a real Mercedes was probably due to how much this car was going to get knocked around and banged up. Ditto the truck and staff car. Personally I like that they did a replica of a lesser known prewar Mercedes, even if they didn't do the best job.

Or modify a Thing if they were really pressed, but since this takes place before the war and the Kübelwagen began development in late 1938, it would be more out of place than an obscure mid '30s German light truck, but just as anachronistic as MP40s.

this same vehicle also appears in Valkyrie, the tom cruise movie during the first 6 minutes of the movie it can be partially seen in the desert sequence behid the fake panzer 4 as the allied plane drops its bomb.its then hidden by smoke and the kunelwagen cruise gets into...its currently on display at the santa Clara ranch in USA...where Deadwood was filmed...the display info with the vehicle states it was built using a 1942 Dodge WC Weapons carrier as a base vehicle.

I love these Mercedes replicas used for the chase sequence. They're reasonably good efforts and look distinctive because they're based on more obscure models.

Anyway, inaccuracies for this baby since I may as well join the griping: it's too big, the body is too wide and long with too large a rear passenger and cargo area, the rear wheels don't turn, the door frames are shaped wrong, the headlights aren't on the fenders, and I can't find an example of a Mercedes G5 with a roll bar like this one's got.

The hood ornament, which isn't really seen very well except in this one brief shot looking through the windshield:

It isn't seen well for most of the chase because it apparently gets knocked loose when they rear-end the truck. Or when that guy falls onto the hood and puts his head through the windshield.
