If it's 1982, it's still a Datsun.

This is disputable. below is British brochure dated for May 1982 and titled "Nissan Sunny" (of course these cars still had also "Datsun" badge at the back):

Wikipedia claims that European sales started in may 1982: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Sunny
Maybe dsl can confirm (or deny) was it 1st month also in case of the British market.

Agree May 82 was 1st month as Nissan Sunny in UK. Those multicolour coachlines could be a special edition on what looks an otherwise simple version. Maybe April 1984 1.3 Jubilee?? Or was it a late tweak for eg March 86 run-out GS becoming Spirit as this one (a 1.5)?? But confusing bumpers - Glass's has all 1.5s getting bigger wraprounds in Feb 85 (so same as the linked Spirit), but no mention of new bumpers for 1.3. So did they continue with old bumpers (which allow our car to be a 1986 1.3 Spirit)?? Or is our car something earlier than Feb 85??

This information explains why in 1985 British market brochure (but also eg. same year Polish article) supposedly brand new B11s have both old and new bumpers. I thought it was mistake or that in case of brochure, importer simply didn't care too much and re-used older pics. In opposite direction both these 1985 documents (their pics) also confirm your suspicion I think.

OK - entering this as 86 1.3 Spirit. But still seems a strange decision by Nissan to try to differentiate the engine sizes by bumper formats - who would really notice?? Would the neighbours really be impressed by a bit of extra black metal??

No good news, although they made the bumpers more wraparound, the taillamps (the transparent part) started to be less wraparound on the side...
- Old - same like in movie
- New
I think they could keep old bumpers in some of them, but taillamps and their trim (this black outlet) were rather unified.

But what is worse, here is 1985 British 1.3 GS with new bigger bumpers:

Didn't suspect these can be so fascinating ;)

Reducing the tail lights wrap-round is very strange - usually in 1980s they increase for safety/better visibility, and there may well have been legal requirements to enforce increased size and visibility from side. I'm too confused now - probably time for my pills.

:D The size of illuminated surface of indicator perhaps reamained the same, they only "cut out" the transparent side edge, which didn't give any light anyway: https://farm6.static.flickr.com/5729/22269049510_ff65668f3b_b.jpg
Still the old ones (except the smaller backlights) were IMO better integrated into the body.
