Sorry but I have to correct you. Your consideration is only valid for the sedan, because for some odd reason the Caravan had such higher mounted mirrow since the very beginning. I suppose because of the fact they were supposed to carry higher luggage on the rear.

When the car has a trailer-coupling, in Germany a second exterior mirror is mandatory. And both exterior mirrors have to be placed, that you can look besides a wider trailer, as Camping- or market-trailers. For that reasons there are -still today- larger, on the wings mounted mirrors or these click-on versions for the regular mirrors.

I wasn't aware of that detail. 1958+ then.
