"Daytona Cobra Coupe"? Are you sure you have the right model name?

The red 427 Cobra is CSX3178, an original car previously owned by Carroll Shelby himself. His estate sold the car at auction in Aug 2016.

The rest of the Cobras in this image are modern, continuation-series Cobras (not originals from the 1960s).

CSX3178 was owned by Carroll Shelby from assembly in March 1966 until his passing in May 2012. One of just five 427 Cobras finished in gorgeous Charcoal Grey, it arrived at Shelby’s LAX facility with a black interior and without an engine and transmission, like all Cobras did. The Shelby American work order specifying “Build 427 Street Cobra CSX3178” was opened on January 7, 1966, and closed on March 3, when it was shipped to Shelby’s Dallas home sporting a 427 with dual quads and a 4-speed Toploader transmission.

In 1972, Shelby’s friend and Cobra specialist Mike McCluskey restored CSX3178, repainting it in Guardsman Blue with a gold nose. At some point Shelby wanted more horsepower and installed an aluminium-head 427 side-oiler engine with automatic transmission. In 2002 the home crew at Shelby American in Las Vegas, Nevada, repainted it in red. In 2016 it was purchased from his estate by the consigner, and received a complete concours restoration by Cobra restorers Legendary Motorcar Company, which returned it to its original Charcoal colour and 427 configuration with a 4-speed.

There’s also an invoice dated 3 March ’66 stating that the car cost $6088 plus $185 in freight costs. An earlier invoice, dated 18 November 1965, states that AC Cars in Thames Ditton, Surrey, supplied a grey Cobra with black trim, but without an engine and gearbox, and without its final paint coat, to Shelby American. Protection boards were used at the front and rear to keep it secure in transit – which cost £3 10s – and that delivery to the docks at Dagenham was £6 15s. The total fee was £1019 15s.
