It cannot be a 220 a because there is no front wing frill in this model. It could be a 220 SE, very usual with two tone body colour, but this was a very rare model, but possible. In such case, model type will be different. |

I'm sorry. but I don't know what you mean with "front wing frill". When I compare these two cars http://wiki.mercedes-benz-classic.com/index.php/Datei:220a180.jpg (220a) and http://wiki.mercedes-benz-classic.com/index.php/Datei:220S180.jpg (220s) I can't see much differences. But than again, perhaps I'm blind... |

Hi, Zodiac, Sometimes my English words make surprises to me and to readers. I am sorry for that. But, concerning to "front wing frill" I meant that chrommed and very thin 'frill' that begins in the front fender and goes to almost the end of front door. Maybe the word frill is incorrect, but I guess you now understand what I meant. This long and thin frill only appeared in 220 S and SE. The 220a has nothing there. There are other differences, but less noticeable, such as the front quarter windows. In 220a this window had no frame, it was only the glass itself. I guess Studebaker had windows like these. In 220 S a chrommed frame was introduced to the glass, more similar to other makes, as VWs. Now, during my research I found a photograph of a 1955 220a with chrommed frame, which means two things: manufacturers introduce changes during production of a model and that our researches 50 years after sale shall be always under suspection. Hi, Bob Dieck, Thank you for your time and kind answer! Since I became a caretaker for a 1967 Mercedes 250 SE [W108], and became astonished how amazingly well old Mercedes were constructed, I have wanted to learn more about old Mercedes history and models. I'm always grateful to learn from persons who have "hands on" experiense. My only experince with this body is a short ride in a friends 1959 220 SE. A truly unforgettable moment. I agree strip is the most adequate. Once I read a report about a standart 1949 Volkswagen and the title was "No Frills Bug" and since then I have frill in my memory. But I see it is quite strange. I have a W111 220 S automatic 1964. Very trustable car. Please note my e-mail dieckmann@globo.com for any discussions. It is amazing you have experiences with E engines. Here in Brazil, nobody wants because of difficult replacement and maintenance of injection pumps. But carburetters are also a problem because we only have fuel with alcohol (25%) which is a bit corrosive for some carbs. |
