2011-2012 Ram 1500 Crew Cab Laramie Longhorn Has automatic all-wheel drive with two-speed dual range BorgWarner 4444 transfer gearbox with center locking multi-disc differential. The system has five selectable modes: Two High, Four Auto, Four High (Lock), Four Low, and Neutral. Four-wheel, four-sensor, four-channel antilock braking system (ABS) with four-wheel electronic traction control and Hill Start Assist (HAS) are standard. Anti-Spin rear limited-slip differential (LSD) is offered as an optional extra. |

Side note: Starting with the 2013 model year, the facelifted Ram 1500 will receive Brake Lock Differential System (BLDS) as standard. BLDS adds more aggressive anti-slip logic to the four-wheel electronic traction control system. The traction control system will brake slipping wheels much harder with more force and for a longer duration, to better simulate differential locks. With BLDS, the Ram will no longer have to have a rear limited-slip differential, but it may continue on as a option. |

^Not only that, but it's finally getting the Pentastar V6 and 8 Speed Automatic (which, BTW will even be available on the 5.7L HEMI), as well. |

Also for '13, the Pentasar/8-Speed combo will have a round knob transmission shift selector in the location of the 4x4 knob seen in Neptune's picture. Like the transmission shift selector in the Jaquar XF. |

Would the gearbox also be the same as the XF? The latest models of that use an 8 speed ZF automatic unit. |

According to wikipedia, the basic underlying gearbox, model 8HP, is the same as the XF. Revised for truck duty. Many others use it also. -- Last edit: 2012-07-12 04:56:20 |

The basic 8HP Series gearbox is the same, but there are different class variants: 8HP30, 8HP45, 8HP70, and 8HP90. The 2013 Ram 1500 will get the heavier-duty 8HP70 version for V-8 engine equipped models. Pentastar V-6 gets the 8-speed 8HP45 HEMI V-8 gets the 8-speed 8HP70 (the same one used in the BMW 760Li (F02) and Land-Rover Range Rover (L322). The ZF gearboxes used in those client’s vehicles are expected to lead a more leisurely life. For this reason, ZF Friedrichshafen AG said they worked closely with the engineers of the Ram 1500 to make sure the gearboxes were ready for/and could tolerate prolonged work related applications like payload hauling or heavy-duty trailer towing. Ram 1500's 8HP70 will feature a new Thermal Management System (TMS) to rapidly warm the transmission up from a cold start. Conversely, TMS will cool the transmission down while towing trailers, to help the gearbox run cooler and with less parasitic losses. |
