1980 Chevrolet Blazer Custom Deluxe (K-5) Last model year for the original front end. Permanent four-wheel drive had been discontinued for 1980, leaving only conventional four-wheel drive, to help improve fuel efficiency on 4x4 models. The 1981 model year would introduce the rounded-line’s new redesigned front end, which seemed to be inspired by a ship’s bow. The new "bow" front end appeared shortly after the 1979 energy crisis, picking up where the discontinued permanent four-wheel drive had left off. Aerodynamic tweaks, front spoiler, weight reduction, updated engines and a new 4-speed automatic gearbox were performed in response to the resent energy crisis, to help the rounded-lines achieve better fuel economy. If it were not for the energy crisis, the rounded-line generation may have kept it’s original front end, up to the 1987 model year. |
