Some sites say it is a modified 77 Cutlass, other that it is a 76 Cutlass. In both case, it was heavily modified...

I thought the 6000 SUX looked like a modified Mid-Size 1973-77 GM. The Cutlass was certainly part of that era.

Although it was quite prescient of them to imagine that in the future everyone would want gas-guzzling leviathians. SUX is only one letter different from you-know-what.

Lol, that's one way of looking at it. Another rumor I've heard is that it means the "6000 sucks" which is a reference to the Pontiac 6000 which was the competitor of the Ford Taurus which was used as the police cars in the movie.

I do not know if it is a 76 or 77 but IMDB is not always right, like Wikipedia, it depends mostly on users info (there were already errors about cars on IMDB, and I corrected some).

That may come together with the world the movie presents to us; it may be just a bit of irony.

It could be a 6000 based on the squareness of the design. Didn't the mid 70's GM cars were talking about have a roundness to the rear of the roof? I don't see that in the picture.

The Ford Excursion and Hummer H2 do 10MPG of real world mileage.

Sorry to correct you guys, but that is definitly NOT a 77 cutlass. If anything I would say its a modified 1983 Pontiac 6000 STE or (even more likely) a 1986 Buick Skyhawk made to "look" like an olds cutlass. Notice how the front bumper is swept back rather than at a square angle and the rear end isn't nearly as "fastback" shaped. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buick_Skyhawk

Not to sound pedantic (but thats inevitable), but isn't a US gallon 3.8 litres, and an imperial gallon about 4.5 litres? MPG would be a little higher in the UK, not that it'd be much to shout about...but who cares.

It's a joke, meant to be ironic that in a future such as that would value cars with such horrible mileage.

To compare, the 1976 and 1977 Cutlass Supreme, with Rocket 350, averages 15 MPG.

It's a joke on '80s car ads. It's an ad within the movie.

the build quality is bad as well....when Clarence and his men are blowing up the shop fronts, he pulls out a locator and mentions robocop is at the steel mill, his accomplice slaps his hand on the roof of an SUX.....look closely...as he slaps his hand on the roof to rally his men, the interior rear view mirror breaks free and drops to the floor!!.

At first I thought this could not be a 1977 Cutlass Supreme, but after looking at the extensive pictures posted I do see it.
The structure of the door openings, the side window shapes, the door handle and lock placement are all correct. One thing however, the door sheet metal does not have the same flared sculpted design as the 77 Cutlass. Either the doors were modified, or the doors on this car may have come from a 1977 Chevrolet Malibu sedan (which look closer to me.)

I'm surprised at the amount of work that went into this custom vehicle, considering the amount of time it is seen on screen. The entire front end is modified. Though the rear modifications aren't as effective, it still seems like a lot of work for a minor vehicle. For a while, I wondered if the 6000 SUX was actually the original design for the futuristic police car design that was rejected and replaced by the Ford Taurus. Some investigation showed that I was wrong.

If you can get a good look at the dashboard, you can see which car they used. It looks to me like a Malibu as the other models, Oldsmobile and Pontiac, have major body lines they would have had to modify, whereas the Malibu doesn't. I think this is the Malibu 4 door.
