230 SL or 250 SL. Plate, that looks real, from february 1967 but, at that time, to import a car to Spain was very difficult, so probably an earlier model year.

Pre 1968 because of the wheels.

If the number plate is correct the car is more likely a 230 SL as the 250 SL was introduced on 27 Februrary 1967, but on the other hand this might be a promotion car by Mercedes to introduce the new model. Statisticly the 230 SL was made (March 1963 to February 1967) in 19.831 units and the 250 SL only made during less than a year in 5.196 units. All this facts comes from this Mercedes hompage Link to "www.emercedesbenz.com" , that also tells us that there were no visible differences between the 230 SL and the 250 SL. Is the black steering wheel an exception as most 230 SL I've seen have a white steering wheel?

The white steering wheel was earlier than the black one. It was changed in the late 60ies (around 1968, I guess) at all Mercedes-models, because it was not common taste any more. Black steering wheels were seen as more modern and sportive.

Nowadays many Benz-enthusiasts are changing it in the other direction. Everyone wants to have the white one (which is more expensive due that). A few of them are even cobbling this old white steering wheel in the 1972+ W108/109 or the 1974 W114/115, who got the "safety"-steering wheel, which was also used in the W123 and W116.
Though the whole construction is different, they tinkering it somehow. Looks disgusting and absolutely not original :p
Recently I saw such a cobble work on a 1976 230.4 [W115]. Terrible sight. This pure 60ies feature, the white steering wheel doesn't fit into this 70ies-car with 70ies interior and paintwork (it was this olive/fir-tree green, which looks like puked up pea-soup).

Would the black steering wheel point towards this being a 250 SL?

No, it was no criterion for different versions or trim-lines.
