this truck is more part of the movie because it is shown in all 3 films

That's not that being "part of the movie" :p
And it is not used enough to get 4 stars rather than 3, I think

I don't understand why they didn't call it a HiLux in the US. Just about everywhere else in the world called it a HiLux and Toyota of North America decided to call it "Pickup" and nothing else.

I believe there is a cookie named Hilux. It is an Oreo knockoff. Perhaps this cookie is only sold in North America and that is my Toyota can't use the name here.

once again this is not an SR5. however the first movie did have SR5 version in it. they are both 1985 Xtra-cab 4X4 toyotas but the first is the only SR5. see my other posts for an explanation of how i can say this with certainty. also, the first had a single roll bar and this truck has a twin tube roll bar.

I love this truck.. I just bought an 1985 Toyota 4x4.. and I am doing a full restoration.. that was inspired by the 4x4 in Back to the Future. I plan on making it a close match.

Notice how the truck changes each movie? The first one has a flat hood. Then, in Part II, it has a raised hood. The third movie's version has light covers that are first seen when Marty first lays on the Toyota being hauled around on the back of the wrecker. It also lacks a front license plate. The license plate number also changes in Part II.

This is something to consider: in BTTF Part I, the Toyota truck has the word “TOYOTA” in vinyl across the tailgate.

However, in Part III, it’s completely gone. It’s not even in a smaller font on the bottom-right corner like I’ve seen on some Toyota trucks from that era.

So what does that say? Did they take an older (by then 5-6 years old) Toyota truck and just repaint it black? Also, we haven’t heard from “Statler Toyota” since Part I. Maybe Toyota didn’t want them to use their name in the second and third movies?

Shervinator, it is possible that the truck that he sees at the beginning of the 1st movie is not the truck he gets at the end due to the timeline being changed by his actions...

Good point Shervinator.

The Toyota badge is still on the grille so I doubt the "Toyota" was removed from the tailgate per Toyota's request, perhaps the reason Statler Toyota became Statler Pontiac is that GM provided the concept cars for the future scenes.

So because Pontiac became the lead car product placement they were forced to remove the "Toyota" from the tailgate?

tonkatracker US

2011-04-05 06:22

that is not what I was saying at all, I have no Idea why the Toyota got removed from the tailgate (who knows maybe the truck was damaged somehow and they repainted it and didn't bother to replace the Toyota decal.) I was just saying that I don't think it is likely that the decal was removed at Toyota's insistence.

I commented on the possible reasoning behind the dealership going from a Toyota to Pontiac in response to Shervinator's comment about not hearing from Statler Toyota since Part I.

also notice that it still says "Toyota" on the top of the windshield like it did in the first movie.

The license plates change between movies as well.

In II and III (same truck for those two movies as they were filmed back to back) its 2BAK860 and the plate faces the camera more instead of being pushed under, and it gains the KC lights after biff cleans it up again in part III, but not before. Perhaps biff took the lights off the car due to marty going up to the lake, where using those lights would be legal.

In Part I The license plate reads 2EZP916 (used the bluray to get that one legible)

This exact truck has been found and is being restored to its former glory! Very interesting story, and it also verifies that the truck used in the original BTTF was destroyed, this is not the same truck.

There are many vehicles used in production.
Hi! the HPV in my nickname stands for "Hollywood Picture Vehicles". As a musician in Hollywood during the 80s and 90s, I would work as Car Wrangler for Movies TV Commercials Print... whatever shoot need a "picture vehicle" (or "picture car"). I did this between gigs, and sometimes, while I was actively working! (nothing worse than getting off the gig at 2am only to be on set at 6am... but I loved it!). Like actors, there are stunt doubles and body doubles. The main vehicle would be the "hero" car. That is, closeups with main characters associated with that vehicle- and it had to be perfect (or perfectly dressed, for camera. The Hero car would be only consistent looking vehicle, but you wouldn't really know because of shot angles etc. And in editing, they find the best shot regardless which vehicle was used! All the rest would be called stunt vehicles whether they were in actual stunts or not, even just a drive by. (While you are looking, do you notice you don't really see faces in the drive by vehicle? Those are extras paid as doubles).
It seems that Art directors and directors in general are looking at the big picture and totally overlook all the details that us car guys spot right away. By noticing all the changes, you can see all the cars they used over the course of production (which could take months or even years!). Sourcing specialty vehicles is a challenge because they will all be different in some small way, and chosen by an art director (usually not a car guy) or prop master for a certain look.
Bottom line, unless you actually worked on the production, you'll never really know which car was the "hero" car. There is no original, because so many were used in production.
This explanation, if not already posted somewhere on this website, would cover just about every discussion on this site. I don't mean to be a killjoy, that's just Show Business.
Also any other older Car Wranglers out there? There's only a handful of us. drop a line say hey!

I had a friend who had one. I chided him for giving Toyota free advertising with his tailgate. The next time I saw it he had removed the TO and the TA so it then said YO. Appropriate for the time.
