Why??? I can see driving a Lincoln Town Car, Lincoln Navigator, Bentley Continental GT or a Cadillac XLR, but a Jensen?

Because it looks so much better than these recent cars that you listed :p (especially this awful thing called Lincoln Town Car)

Imagine that Bentley and an old Dodge Charger had a one night stand, and the Jensen is roughly what you'd come up with (plus, being an old car, it's just cool). Besides, the Navigator is among the more useless vehicles currently being built (although it's got a nice interior - I dig the throwback to older Lincolns), and the Town Car? It's platform is almost as old as that Jensen.

The Town Car is the best luxury sedan on the market! I can not stand all these new looks and bold creatures being sent out by 'Benz, Saab, Cadillac, future Lincolns and Lexus! The only good luxury cars on market today are the Bentley lineup, Lincoln Town Car, Lincoln LS and Ford 500. Navigators are useless I'll give you that, but they are luxurious and comfortable and they look decent (well, the 07' looks HOT) and it is an SUV and a fashion statement. Plus, stars haven't gone on not noticing the Town Car and Navigator. I forget wich famous dude it was, but MSNAutos made a list of cars used by famous people and one was driving a Lincoln Town Car Signature Series, another a 99' Dakota and one had a HUMMER H2. I know Raven Symone' has a 05' Ford Excursion. Just because a car hasn't been changed for a while, doesn't mean its bad. I still don't really see driving a Jensen Interceptor, but hey, this is just opinion and you guys don't see why I love Tempo's. ;)

Hecubus CA

2006-06-20 15:56

Oh, there's nothing inherently wrong with the Town Car, it's just that it's a car you get driven in, not a car you drive.

And, one of the key things to remember about the Jensen is that it's powered by Chrysler V8s (I know they used the 383, and I think the 440 was also used). It's a really luxurious muscle car.

I'd say a Jensen Interceptor is Britain's secret supercar. Probably one of the world's most underrated cars of all time.

True and I love the Town Car. But just to annoy Explorer 4x4, it has neither the build quality, nor the technical sophistication of a Euro Luxo Saloon like a Merc S-Class or Bimmer 7-Series. And the 'best' (for whom?) Luxury car is the Rolls Royce Phantom, followed by the Maybach.

Not even close. Olds 442 and Buick GS were intermediates with big engines stuffed into them resulting in atrocious handling. They also were built on regular assembly lines with typical sloppy GM fit and finish of the period.

The Jensen Interceptor was a hand-built ultra luxury supercar along the lines of an Iso Grifo or Facel Vega, with a sophisticated suspension system and the finest materials for the interior. It was in a different price segment to boot.
The closest thing to it made in the States might be the Stutz Blackhawk.

Meh, the last good looking Town Car IMO was in '89. The nineties were OK, but then when they were redesigned in the late '90s, it just got ugly. I'd rather have a new Mercury Grand Marquis than a new Town Car.

The Jensen isn't my kind of car either. I guess I'm superficial because the look turns me away.

Wasn't the last good looking Town Car the 1978?
The Jensen Interceptor styling is a love it/hate it affair. For some it is too bland, others find it the perfect 'understatement' to conceal the price and capabilities of the car.
I would like to have both - a seventies Town Car AND an Interceptor.

explorer4x4

2006-06-22 15:21

Qwerty, there is no difference between the Lincoln Town Car, Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis except trim and the grills. I personally don't care too much for the Town Car, I'd place it above the Jensen Interceptor any day. I think the new Zephyr is better, and the next generation Navigator and MKZ/Mark Z along with the Mark LT are very good looking, I personally have nothing I don't like about the Town Car, it just seems boring. It hasn't been restyled forever, when I look at it, I think of black cabs in New York and it just is boring.

Hecubus CA

I'm not sure that the Town Car shares a single body panel with the Grand Marquis or Crown Victoria (it certainly has a more bulbous roofline).

In fact, Lincoln's entire lineup is a little underwhelming, since they killed off the last remotely interesting car they built, the LS. They're all competent vehicles, but there's nothing bold, different, or noteworthy (I imagine the management got a little spooked after the Blackwood debacle, which, useless as it was, is a little cool).

If I had my way, I'd immediately put the Continental concept from a few years back into production, as a flagship to go up against the 7 series, the S-class, and such. I'd also cut the Zephyr/MKZ/whatever in favour of something that's a little less of a family car in a tuxedo (while we're at it, that chassis could be used to replace the X-type). Either way though, right now, all of Lincoln's cars are based on something more common, which isn't the way to make a great luxury brand.

Meanwhile, although I don't think the Jensen's in my top 10 cars (one incredebly hard list to not overcrowd), it's likely in my top 100 (at the very least, I'd leap at the chance to drive one).

I guess that he means for the design (which is strange taste, I can believe that he like Tempo and Explorers as they are nice - or at least not bad -, but a Town Car ??) or for the luxury of interior which is not the best either I believe (though I could not go into a Town Car to compare it with European luxury cars :D)

I like the Town Car, I don't like all these bold, ugly things like Caddy's CTS, STS and DTS or Lexus' sedans or Infiniti monsters. It is the only classic luxury sedan left.

Very funny Junkman, you know I haven't driven as much because it would be illegal. I know a guy with a Town Car and I've riden in it and it is comfortable, has solid handling and it feels unlacking in power. I've seen Interceptor interiors in pictures, the Dodge Caliber's is better. I didn't notice any navigations systems, DVD players, 6-CD Disc Changers or heated/cooled cup holders. I don't know about power, the Jensen might have the Town Car beat there (The Chrysler 300C and 07' Sebring and the Caddilac XLR beat it by miles and miles and miles and miles...).

antp BE

2006-06-22 20:05

For the Caliber you mean the recent Dodge model that they started to sold in Europe? What is the link between this recent cheap non-sport car and the Jensen which is an old expensive sport car? (btw, Town Car is for straigt lines, Jensen is probably more made for UK roads :p)

Yeah, I don't think the Lincolns share any body panels with the Ford/Mercury either. They're the same platform, but don't look a like. Like the FWD Continental was built on the Taurus/Sable platform, but it doesn't really look like the Taurus or Sable. I just think the current Town Car is kind of ugly.

And Explorer, why are you comparing new cars to something built in the '70s? That's like comparing broadband to 14.4k "high speed".

If I was in the market for a nice expensive European sports car, i'd buy a Ferrari F430.

This is a factory press demonstrator, a Mk 2 Interceptor, finished in the unusual shade of Berkeley Brown and first registered on 16 September 1970.

In an attempt to drive cost effective public awareness, Sales and Marketing Director Richard 'Dick' Graves and public relations consultant Tony Goode often made a number of vehicles available for TV and movies - though not always the best movies it has to be said!

Press cars usually (but not exclusively) had 'EA1' plates for Interceptors, whilst FF's usually had EA4 plates, such as HEA4D, the '4' designating that the car was equipped with 4 wheel drive.

Do you still have the car? It's a pity it has been repainted red and has the modified wheels. Hopefully, someone will restore it to its original state again in the future.

"BEA 898J, a Berkeley brown Interceptor II. This car was the 1970 Earls Court Show car. Used by Good Relations as a press car. It had an Air-Call radio phone installed, which can be seen in use in one of the many episodes."

"In actual fact this was not an Earls Court show car. Tony Good of Good Relations always had the use of a car, which doubled as a London based Press Car for photo shoots etc and this is one of them. This was the other car fitted with Air Call 2 way radio, call-sign Gold 1.
