Technically, the 1958 Continental was still a separate make as these 2 links to the 1958 brochure make clear:

I also have an early 1958 edition of Look magazine with an advertisement for a '58 Continental.
At the bottom it says "Continental Division of Ford Motor Co.". Lincoln is not mentioned.

This approach continued in the '59 brochure where Lincoln and Continental were not mentioned in the same breath:

Note complete change of direction for 1960:

Yes, it seems so. I've read this post in the forum and (if I've understood) Continental should be the make from 1955 to 1986 when, he says, "....until the 1986 Lincolnization of the by then, Mark VII and mid-sized sedan Continental. From 1986 the former Continental Mark VII became the Lincoln Mark VII and the Continental became the Lincoln Continental....The Continental Mark and the Continental were ”Lincolnized” for the 1986 year-model. It was not until 1986 when the Continental name as make was removed entirely from the Mark automobile and degraded to model status for the Continental that became the Lincoln Continental. The Mark became a Lincoln and so did the Continental.

The problem: there are actually 36 pages for Lincoln Continental /vehicles.php?resultsStyle=asImages&sortBy=2&make=Lincoln&model=Continental

Searching by year, the first page is number 4 with the 1st Lincoln Continental /vehicles.php?resultsStyle=asImages&sortBy=2&make=Lincoln&model=Continental&page=4

And from 1958 (page 5 /vehicles.php?resultsStyle=asImages&sortBy=2&make=Lincoln&model=Continental&page=5 ) to 1986 (page 34 /vehicles.php?resultsStyle=asImages&sortBy=2&make=Lincoln&model=Continental&page=34 ) there are nearly one thousand vehicles and most of them 'Mark...' that could be changed.

I would certainly vote against that.
There are times when logic and convenience trump technical accuracy!
Besides researchers would have an easier time searching for information if we leave listings the way most people understand them and confine the technicalities to parenthetical notes.

In the case of '69 + Continentals, the case is not as clear as there was no longer a separate Continental division of the Ford Motor Co. by then.

The argument of the divison falls since it was closed down in 1958 and Ford continued selling the cars under Continental marque for 1959. Using it again in 1969 wouldn´t be strange.
And keeping them listed as Lincolns just because most people dont know there is a difference is also wrong since we always try to find the correct commercial name for other cars when they differ from market to market.
The trouble of finding similar/identical models sold under different marques and modelnames we have already for several cars, we can´t rewrite history just to make it simpler. It has to be solved in another way.

Anyway, about this issue it´s better to keep the discussion on the forum where most of the arguments are: http://forum.imcdb.org/index.ks?page=forum_topic&id=6113&index=0

As I understand it the 1956-57 Continental MKII and the 1958 Continental are the only non-Lincoln Continentals, from Wikipedia .
