Any idea what the plate is?

I think it's a Northern Ireland plate. Some people get them as cherished numbers (vanity plates) to hide the age of the car.

xIL is the code for Fermanagh.

Who changed it to 1995?

there's something odd about this one. the body colored lower rocker panels SHOULD indicate a late car (1995 or 1996 in the U.S. ~ though i'm not sure that was the same in all markets), but something something seems a bit off. i'm thinking that when the body color rockers came into play, (at least) that lowest black semi-soft trim line should have been body color as well. do we know the year..? i've only had a half dozen E34 cars over the years - i really feel like i should be able to help more, but the trim and detail changes by market always give me pause.

It has to be a 1995 because there never was a model year for 1996 for the 5 series, it just went straight to 1997 with the E39. You can tell it's specifically a '95 because in the final year of production the rocker panels are body colored and the turn signal behind the front fender was added.

Some facts about E34!

535i was offered 1988-1993 in Europe (1993 extremly rare, the last 50 cars went to Alpina to become Alpina B10 BiTurbo) In the USA were the offered 1989-1993.

Side indicators was law all years of the E34 in Italy, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, UK, Japan and many if not all in France have them as well. First from 3/94 were the world standard. This is a UK car = everyone has side indicators.

Painting the lower parts of the bumpers and bellow the doors was VERY popular, this one lacks the M-skirts.

Outside North-America the last Model year of the E34 was 1996, last produced Sedan was 1/96 in South-Africa and 12/95 in Germany. The Touring went on to 6/96. I have owned four 1996 540i/6 and stills owns two of them.

More; The elephant mirrors had MY 1988-1992 cars as this one has. From 1993 the mirrors were on a stick. In LHD markets could you have M-mirrors (from 10/92) standard option on M5 (standard on M5 20 Jahre, 1993 US M5, 1995 Canada M540i, 1995 US 540i M-Sport and 1994 525i Sportlimousine) and Individual option on the rest of E34.

The Alpinweiss car is maxium a 1992 car.
