The blue Volkswagen Bug in The Big Lebowski is an obvious reference to this battered VW driven by M. Emmet Walsh as the psychotic private investigator... Superb bad guy.

You can see the '1300' badge on the boot. This is the only model year that has 1285cc engine fitted in for our market.

your eyes are way better than mine if you can tell that the badge on the engine lid says 1300, to me it looks like the badge has been removed and the three holes (where the pins on the emblem goes) are all that are there.

Don't worry about it. You're right, the 1300 badge has vanished, but as you say you can see where it was. Wheels, engine cover, tail lights, number plate light housing, all say 1966 m.y. 1300. (I had one once.)

but none of that changed for 1967 did it? well except the 1300 badge was replaced with the Volkswagen badge.

IIRC When the 1967 Volkswagen Sedan came to our market, they had 1493cc engine fitted in. I remembered that one of my neighbor was swapping with another VW engine and I took the original 1500 engine with me for my own work :p

The engine cover changed for 1967; it was more humped and lacked the moulding in the middle. Compare /vehicle_260669-Volkswagen-1300-Typ-1-1967.html

@chris40 but is that true of the US- models? (we didn't have the 1300 in 1967) According to the Volkswagen Official Service Manual - Beetle and Karmann Ghia 1966,1967,1968,1969 published by Volkswagen of America, Inc. under the section Changes by Model year this is what it says:

1966 (Chassis Numbers 116 000 001 to 116 1 021 298)

1. Increased horsepower (from 1200 to 1300cc) Number 1300 on engine lid.
2. Ventilating slots in wheels, flat hub caps.
3. Emergency Flasher switch.
4. Headlight dimmer switch mounted in turn lever.
5. Defroster outlet at center of dash.
6. Semi-circular horn ring.

1967 (Chassis numbers 117 000 001 to 117 844 832)

1. Increased horsepower (from 50 to 53) and displacement (from 1300 to 1500cc.)
2. Single-unit headlamps with chrome rings installed in fender recesses.
3. Dual-circuit brake system, with independent operation of front and rear brakes'
4. Back-up lights.
5. Parking light incorporated in front turn signals.
6. Locking buttons on doors
7. 12-volt electrical system (36-amp battery).
8. VOLKSWAGEN nameplate on engine lid.

It doesn't say anything about a new engine lid, nor to the pictures of the 1966 or 1967 look like the engine lid is different. Maybe we didn't get the new engine lid here?

Indeed, we did get the new engine lid.

I will just have to take y'alls word on it because I do not see a difference in the two engine lids...

This is from Volkswagen Beetle by William Burt:

but even that excerpt differs from the book I have (which is an official VW part) because it says that the fuel filler nozzle was relocated for the 1968 as well as the taillights being enlarged, again in 1968.

Edit: I guess I should also point out the disclaimer in the book:

Quote The instructions in this manual apply only to Type 1 cars of 66-69 manufactured for the American market. Earlier and later Type 1 cars and the European and other export versions differ in certain details...

It's very hard to see any difference, but here's another quote to confirm:

from "VW Beetle: the new custom handbook" By Keith Seume

Both American books /authors.
