1989 Ford Tempo GL Four Door Sedan, |

That's actually a Mercury Topaz (the steeper C-pillar gives it away). -- Last edit: 2006-05-10 03:09:51 |

This wasn't a mercury, this was a ford. I saw the blue oval on the grill. |

it looks like that one: http://www.automobile-broadway-2000.com/catalogue_2003/18.jpg |

Yes, definetly a Ford Tempo, GLS or GL model. Not LX or AWD because the LX model is base and has no special things about it and the AWD badge is missing. |

But that rear quarter window and C-pillar scream Topaz. 1992 had body colored trim, but same body as the '89: Link to "ashstreetautos.theautodealer.com" -- Last edit: 2006-05-11 08:20:53 |

Well, indeed they do, but if somebody actually saw the Ford logo on the grill it has to be a Tempo. And the trim is Fords, but, the c-piller and wheels are Mercury's. |
|
◊ 2006-05-11 09:03 |
The grille can be swapped easily between the two cars. The c-pillar however is kinda permanent unless you're really skilled and dedicated. |
|
◊ 2006-05-11 10:07 |
I find lots of cars with a similar C-pillar when I search for "1989 Ford Tempo": http://images.google.com/images?q=1989%20Ford%20Tempo |
|
◊ 2006-05-11 21:26 |
Why would they switch the grill? |
|
◊ 2006-05-11 22:04 |
Broken or dented or something? That grille is probably just about the right height to get hit by errant shopping carts. |
|
Explorer4X4 ◊ 2006-05-11 22:20 |
Is there a front view of this car? Everything abou this car is Tempo, except the C-pillar. And I looked up the rims on tempotopaz.com and they are standard on the 1986-1991 Ford Temppo L and GL and standard on 1988-1991 Mercury Topaz L. Otherwise, it is very hard to tell. It seems like a Tempo, only, that c-pillar makes it seem Topaz. The trim, wheels and front end seem very much Tempo. |
|
◊ 2006-05-11 22:25 |
I'm wondering if it's some weird Frankenstein-esque abaration of both the Tempo and the Topaz. Based on that c-pillar, the base car is much more likely to be a Topaz (given that the roof is one of the more integral parts of the body). |
|
◊ 2006-05-11 22:43 |
But how come that lots of cars wich such pillar are listed as Tempo on Google Images? Maybe that at a time Ford rebadged the Topaz body to a Tempo? |
|
◊ 2006-05-12 06:46 |
Don't look at the bottom of the pillar because that chrome trim on the above red car doesn't look stock compared to the design in that area. Look at the angle of the pillar. This car was in your link and look how much more of an angle it is compared to the Topaz: http://www.ridejudge.com/rides/00016303.jpg Also consider the rear sail window. On the red car above, it curves at the top. On the Tempo on the link above, it comes to a point. -- Last edit: 2006-05-12 06:48:36 |

OK then I agree for the Topaz ![]() |

Explorer4X4 ◊ 2006-06-01 17:24 |
Topaz L maybe? |
|
◊ 2006-06-02 06:03 |
Topaz was never offeredin an L trim level. Lowest would be GS. But trim level isn't that important. |
|
Explorer4x4 ◊ 2006-07-26 23:08 |
The abse Tempo model was S, followed by mid-class GS mid-class model, the LS model was the luxury model and the XR5/LTZ were the sport models. Just like the Tempo had the L (base) model, the GL mid-class, the LX luxury, the AWD all wheel GL model and the GLS sport model. |
|
◊ 2006-08-05 00:39 |
it coulde be a Topaz GS of 1989 with wheels from the basic Tempo L |
|
◊ 2006-10-06 08:48 |
I think the one scene showed that it was a Tempo L |
|
Explorer4x4 ◊ 2007-01-15 19:01 |
Its a Topaz L. The only Topaz that had those rims anyway. |
|
◊ 2007-01-16 06:28 |
Topaz didn't come in L trim level! |
|
Explorer4x4 ◊ 2007-02-01 19:22 |
YES it did. Ug, this is getting quite old you know. For one fact, here is a Mercury Topaz L base model. And then on TempoTopaz.com they also list Topaz L models.![]() Whats the letter by the Topaz badge. Tell me. ![]() From 1984 to 1992 Ford offered 'L' badged Tempos and Topaz' as the base model, with absolutely no fancy things. Just a stripped down model, sold mainly as commercial cars, such as DRIVING SCHOOL CARS. -- Last edit: 2007-02-01 19:29:25 |

Explorer4x4 ◊ 2007-02-02 16:37 |
Topaz had: L (as proved, and L was the base model sedan) GS (mid-class) GS-AWD (all wheel drive mid-class) LS (luxury) LS-AWD (all wheel drive, luxury) LTS (sport) XR5 (sport) This is a second generation (pre-facelifted, 1988-1991) Mercury Topaz L. The trim and front end prove its a second generation, the rims prove it is a base model L and the C-pillar prove its a Mercury Topaz. |

I have seen this movie. This car was used in the driving school scene. You can se very well the Ford blue oval on the front grille, on the only wheelcovers that it had, and on the rear, near the badge "Topaz L". I googled for curiosity "Ford Topaz", and I discovered that it existed in Mexico: was a Ford-rebadged Mercury Topaz! ![]() Link to "www.google.it" Well, maybe this one was only a Mercury with Ford badge... ![]() By the way, in this scene were seen in background two Jaguar XJ (XJ40 and X300) and a grey Mercedes-Benz W116. -- Last edit: 2007-02-08 18:37:48 |

No, it was filmed in Canada. http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0313911/locations Could it just be a Topaz that had an accident and got a replacement Ford grille? -- Last edit: 2007-07-16 12:32:45 |
|
◊ 2007-07-16 12:36 |
Or a Topaz that once was imported by someone from Mexico? (e.g. a Mexican that came to Canada?) But indeed the replaced grille is more likely for this kind of "cheap" car. -- Last edit: 2007-07-16 12:43:56 |

We need a picture of the grille. |
|
◊ 2007-07-17 14:47 |
We can believe Benny when he says that it has a Ford grille, no? |
|
◊ 2008-11-15 23:14 |
it has a Ford grill-watched the movie yesterday |
|
◊ 2009-01-30 01:41 |
maybe they just found it in a junkyard without a grille, got a tempo grille to replace it and used it for the movie |
|
◊ 2009-11-09 02:59 |
clearly a topaz (i own 16) but you can tell its been tampered with #1.the chrome trim on the rear c pillar is brighter than the rest of the trim on the car, #2.the grille can be switched with 2 screws so whoever owned the car from its production date could have switched the grille, #3.if you look closely at the chrome center caps on the rims "where are the bolts" 2 generation 1988-1991 topazs most of the time came with steel rims with center caps and trim rings, steel rims with wheelcovers and polycast rims. topazs and tempos with the trim rigs and centercaps came with long chrome lug nuts on the wheels and steel rims with wheelcovers came with the normal lug nuts, so its so easy to se that over the cars life it's had parts swaped out from a tempo. |

who ever put this vehicle on her is a complete idiot. the topaz is a mercury and for is a tempo. |
|
Gomselmash11 ◊ 2011-09-05 19:00 |
Except you are the idiot if not see the Made for field: MEX. |
|
◊ 2011-09-05 20:11 |
But the film was made in Canada. Perhaps the made for MEX was added to all Ford Topaz entries in a batch correction. As I said earlier, perhaps this car is just a Mercury Topaz with a replacement grille. |
