What was with the vinyl rooves these thing had? My dad had a Mk5 version (very similar to this) years ago, he actually claims this was the most reliable car he's ever had, and I like it's funny how it gave him less trouble than cars he's had that were made decades later.

I had one of these...just a 1.6L ...and it was great...& yes..very reliable (..alot better than the later Sierra 1.8 .. rubbish.!) ... Nowhere near one of my top cars (But..maybe one of my most reliable.!) ..very fondly remembered.! ;)

I just don't get how such an old design could be more realiable than newer one, especially in the case of the Sierra that succeeded it. Don't car makers learn anything from experience?

These were reliable, I certainly see more Cortinas today than I do early Sierras.

BTW if you look in the background whenever it parks up (and backfires usually) outside Hyacinth's house, there is a dark yellow version of the Mk4 Cortina parked on the driveway in immaculate condition! in fact you can see it in that 'sparks' photo above!

Apparently they did...

I can imagine it would have been modified (probably in the boot) with some device that makes smoke and a flash to create the backfiring effect, odd pannels etc.. in 1995, this car would be the equivelant of a beat-up L-reg mondeo that we today dont even look at as a classic. Makes you think if modern cars of today will become sort after classics such as the MkIV Cortina...

According to howmanyleft.co.uk, there are no Cortina 1.6 GLs still registered in the UK...the last one was in 2006 (and there were only around 40 still registered when this show was made).

As far as I know, this car *may* still exist somewhere. I have a couple of pictures taken of it a couple of years ago parked in some rather overgrown private area.

You might be right. I found a forum where is two pictures of this particular car in some overgrown area. But that discussion has taken place in 2006, almost 9 years ago...

Based on the number plates, the vehicle must've been built between August 1977 and July 1978.

We've identified this car using the details you provided
CORTINA 1600 GL 1978
Registration number: VSD389S
Body type: 4 Door Saloon
Colour: Blue
Date of first registration: May 1978

There was never a GLS trim on Mk4 Cortinas - someone's been playing with the rear badging.

I found nothing more recent about it. It did have some value as people are making replicas: https://www.flickr.com/photos/128691640@N04/40761064795/
