In the explosion you don't actually see the car being hurt by the explosion. You don't see the car at all, just the fireball. |

My vote is for special effects. IMDB trivia and goofs doesn't provide an answer. |

It was a shell (a buck) of a Roadmaster. Other scenes (deleted) were shot using a pristine '47, but for the explosion, they used a second Buick which was gutted. The reason you mostly just see a fireball is because the SP/FX guys messed up and the car didn't blow up the way it was supposed to. |

I have the car from the explosion scene. Thankfully the pyrotechnics setup installed in the car either failed or was reconsidered sparing the Buick from being destroyed. The only visible damage is in fact the burned paint on the quarter panel. I am currently interested in selling the car due to lack of time necessary to restore it.
