This may seem like pointless nitpicking (mind you I think that's part of being on IMCDB  ) but I think for the XJ40 Daimlers, 3.6 and 4.0 should be in the extra info rather than the model name. |

Much more use to have them clearly separated for research purposes, otherwise you end up with an increasing pile of unsorted examples (including whatever other non-XJ40 Daimlers we've given up on). |

Think where we may be in 10 years time - the pile is not that big now, but likely to grow by then. And our millions of new users by then may not realise how our classification protocols were decided and get confused - let's just make things as clear and easy as possible for future audiences. |

Not that argument again  (except normally people say something like 30 years time) The 4.0 engine replaced the 3.6 so they will be seperated by year anyway.I'm guessing even if we're all still here many years later, there won't be that many more XJ40 Daimlers turning up due to their rarity (and for new movies there's going to be less and less chance of them appearing as they die out more) Look how many more Silver Spirit-era Rolls-Royces and Bentleys there are compared to XJ40 Daimlers and they aren't sorted out that well. -- Last edit: 2012-11-27 16:51:50 |

Personally, as much as I've liked working on this site, the idea of me still spending hours doing it in many years time scares me. Makes you wonder how long a website like this could possibly last (who knows what the future holds) Mind you it would be great if it gets to the stage where we actually get paid for it! |

Well, as I'm sure you know, this Daimler was really just a luxury model in the XJ range. I found a nice old brochure at my grandad's house (one from the first few years of the XJ40), and inside it's just called "Daimler". But it gets listed as a make because people usually still refer to Daimler as a brand (it feels incorrect to say "Jaguar Daimler") Also, with this one, I don't think we can tell if it's the 3.6 or the 4.0, it's just listed as 1987 by default. -- Last edit: 2012-11-28 16:55:38 |

By the way, those look to me like Sovereign alloys (they have 5 lugnut holes) Is that really a chrome strip or a coachline? Switch this to Jag Sovereign if you like - these details have drowned me before. In terms of your grandad's brochure, if it was from the 3.6 era, there was no reason then to identify the engine as there was only one possibility, but with the 4.0 introduction it would make sense for Daimler to differentiate the new size from its predecessor (though I don't know if they actually did so in formal references). 3.6 then becomes a retrospective designation, just like all the things we give first type names to such as Silver Shadow 1 (and every so often someone objects to the use of SS1 on a parallel argument to yours here but custom prevails). |

With the XJ6 and Sovereign we don't put the engine size in the model name, so I don't think we should do it with the Daimler. They will be separated by different years anyway. -- Last edit: 2012-11-29 22:11:58 |

Six years later, I stumble upon this discussion, and I notice that most Daimlers in this case are indeed listed with no model name, but some are listed as "3.6" (and a lone "4.0"). The total number of Daimler-badged XJ40s is still manageable, so I took upon myself to rename, or rather, to name them with either 3.6 or 4.0, just to add some clarity to the IMCDb Daimler model list. |
