Just saw this in HD on Sky, it does say 245 DL on the little badge on the wing.

Made for USA due to US spec headlight and federally mandate side marker at 4th picture provided by G-MANN.

I like how this car crashing causes everything else in the movie to happen. I read one of the earlier drafts in the script and there was actually a deleted scene that has a little joke to go with the car. Here's the quote:

INT. JANE'S OFFICE - DAY

JANE
(on phone)
Well, Mrs. Deetz, I am doing my
best. What? Oh the Maitlands
are fine country people. What
make car do they drive?

She runs to the window again almost popping cord.

EXT. MAITLAND'S CAR - DAY

The Maitlands drive their 1984 Volvo station wagon
toward their house.

Interesting that they had always planned on the Maitlands driving a Volvo, unknown why they went to a 1977 model, though.

Since it gets dumped into a river, an 11 year old Volvo was probably cheaper to buy than a 4 year old Volvo.

That's a good point, G-Mann. I think the '77 model is cooler looking, anyways :)

I like this body style of Volvo’s station wagons, but I’m not too crazy over that yellow paint. Perhaps if it had been in a different colour.

Neptune, I don't really mind the paint color, I think that was actually a pretty popular color for this particular Volvo model. The new movie Fun Size appears to have the same Volvo and color featured in the film. And Tim Burton always uses over-the-top colors and designs for everything lol.

Each time i see it i find funny that a little dog can hold the Volvo out of the water until he gets off that piece of wood :)

The joke is funnier for car enthusiasts like us. These cars are absolute tanks! The dog would never be able to hold up a 200 series wagon haha.

These are like the Swedish version of the M-4 Sherman Tank!!! Also, 1977 was the last year for single round headlights on the 240 Series, From 1978 through 1980, The 240 Series (Ecept the 242 GT) would have 4 round headlights as well as the smaller square grille and different hod.

I'm actually surprised that the Maitlands owned a Swedish car. They seemed like very proud American people who would've had a Ford or something along those lines.

maybe they picked the Volvo for its safety record... which didn't saved their lives anyway... ;)

Well, when it comes to going underwater, I think even the durable build quality and safety features of a Volvo wouldn't help ;)

Here's a video of a '78 model, almost identical, although right hand drive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xptHatzGMA8

Very solid cars. Equivalent vehicle today would be the V90.

Always thought this nice yellow Volvo matched the Maitland home before its makeover quite nicely. The bright, country kitchen and floral wallpaper had a "sunny" vibe to it much like the color of this car, but I will agree that it seemed somewhat out of place for the Maitlands to own a foreign car. They seemed to be old-fashioned Americans who would've fit right in with a Ford Country Squire or Jeep Grand Wagoneer, but I have a feeling part of the joke is that the 245, one of the safest cars ever produced, is what they end up getting killed in. wish the car had gotten a little more screen time. It really is a beauty and it's becoming more and more difficult to find a pre-1980s model with the round headlights.
