If you are talking about the car to the right, its a Buick Regal detirmined by rear lights.

I'm afraid it's an H-body ('86-'90) Buick LeSabre. It's a little too blocky for one of the FWD Regals, and it doesn't look like a G-body Regal either.

How do you tell what this sucker is? The picture basically tells us nothing. All you can see is the bumper, lights and trunk anyway. I'd say it is closest to a Buick Regal or Buick LeSabre. It could be a Dodge St. Regis though.

This picture clearly shows what it is, to those who know what it is...
The car on the left is a 1986-1990 Buick Estate Wagon and the car on the right is a 1990-1991 Buick LeSabre 4 door sedan. Can't tell the trim level however (Custom or Limited) but a side view would help.
It's probably not a 1991 LeSabre considering the release date of the movie!

I agree that it's a LeSabre. Both '90/'91 LeSabres and Regals had the chrome trim under the taillights, but the Regal had large reverse lights in the bumper while LeSabres had the reverse light in the chrome trim. The one in the screen capture above doesn't have the large reverse light so it must be a LeSabre.

The car on the right sure looks like a 1990 Buick Lesabre to me, giving the economic stature of the people portrayed in the movie, Id say its a limited.

Given how big their house is and everything you'd think the McCallisters would have something like a BMW or Mercedes (all families in John Hughes films seem quite well-off). Maybe the film crew just couldn't be bothered to get one just for this one shot.

I always sort of thought that, too, but then again these Buicks were quite new at the time of the film meaning the McCallisters had just bought them recently and Buicks are still pretty expensive brand new, especially back then. I like what Chris Columbus did for this movie, though. He's said he tried to make the house look and feel like Christmas with everything being red and green and if you look at the family's cars, they match the house. The LeSabre is a red/maroon color which is pretty Christmas-like and the Electra has wooden paneling which is kind of a Christmas feel, too, since it's like pine. At least that's how I interpreted it :)
