This is a '71 with a '72 rear clip attached, since Plymouth didn't make any Barracuda convertibles after '71. They evidently provided cars like this one to the sets of "Mannix" and "Mission: Impossible," both of which, like "The Brady Bunch," were shot at the Paramount lot. Since this was only used in one scene in one episode, I think it was likely borrowed from one of those other shows.

TV boy IS correct. The interesting thing about this 1971 Barracuda is that not only did it have a 1972 rear clip, but it also had a 1972 grille and emblems. But it did NOT have the protruding 1972 marker lenses. Too bad Greg damaged the rear bumper assembly during the impact with Mrs. Brady's Plymouth station wagon. These Paramount cars (don't forget the Mod Squad) are VERY rare and I'd love to know who exactly did the 1972 conversions.

Greg didn't actually hit the station wagon, it was damaged by another car earlier in the show. Greg was joining the rest of the family in trying to re-enact the accident with the wagon to determine who was at fault.

Why dress up a 71 with 72 emblems and rear clip? Were Plymouth dealers expecting customers to come in and demand a convertible because they saw one under greg bradys's butt?

Sort of. No '72 drop tops were available... but Plymouth did want the new look of the '72 featured on the show and the show needed us to SEE the actors, so a hardtop was no good. They simply put the '72 grille and tail on the '71 they already had- best compromise possible.

It's crazy they even made a 72 Plymouth Barracuda convertible for this show. For the Brady Bunch?? How could that show be that important that the needed to make a special car for it?

Why? It's switching out some details to freshen the '71 to appear to be a '72, and it was advertising. Chrysler marketing would just need to send a car to a dealer. It may be "for the Brady Bunch" but in reality it was for Paramount television and placement in Mission Impossible and Mannix as mentioned in another post. Besides, although it was not a top hit, it was run ad nauseum when the show ended and there wasn't the programming or number of channels that came later. So people saw the Plymouth for years, and years, and years to the point where several generations of people will recognize that car. The advertising not only outlasted that model but the brand! I'm sure more work was done for other shows that produced a lot less in returns.
