The uglier and more gaudy the better. You couldn't find too many production cars tht would have this much of an impact. If they used a normal car it probably wouldn't have much attention as the Truckster did. (i.e. The location of the gas filler or the airbag that went off at odd times).

Sure, it could carry alot of gear, drove fairly well, but, when Barris got a hold of it, and made the "the family truckster", they turned something already awful into something alot worse. Better still, didn't anyone find it odd that the second set of headlights/tailights never worked?

In an amazing coincidence, American Motors once owned Kelvinator refrigerator company, which later joined a company (White Consolidated) that also owned Westinghouse appliances, and later on bought Frigidaire, which was owned by General Motors. I'd like to think John Hughes and Harold Ramis put in an early joke about automobiles becoming boring appliances, but I think it's too much of a stretch.

EchoBoy ◊ 2012-05-21 00:13	If you look closely at the beginning of the movie, the dealership they went to said "Lou Glutz Motors" and it had the wagon's crown logo on it, so I suppose Lou Glutz Motors is supposed to be the fictional automaker and the Wagon Queen Family Truckster is the model. I'm guessing 1983 was the only year it was made haha.

In Illinois, either the old plates must be transferred to the new vehicle, or a License Applied sticker must be put in the window. The old plates aren't transferred, and there is no sticker. They would have been pulled over as soon as they left the dealership.

I am building a replica and have learned quite a bit about them, as to do it correctly. First to nail down the year is the drivers sail mirror. It was 79-80 only item. Then we have the front bumper. The vents were only used in 79-80. But both 79 and 80 are unique 1 year only bumpers. In 1979 the tag was center mounted. In 1980 they moved the tag from the center to the drivers side. At Lou Glutz, the dealer tag is in the center of the bumper which is why they were identified as 79's. But look to the drivers side there is a carrage bolt filling the hole where the tag was mounted for 1980 only, there was no hole there in 79. Also in all later scenes where the front tag is not present, you can see the center of the bumper is lacking the recess and holes for the center tag mount a 79 bumper would have. In 1980 the center of the bumper is peaked as is the Trucksters bumper. None of the Truckster used the 1979 Bumpers, all were 1980 only. The next item to confirm this is the speedometer. The one on screen was 80-81 specific. In 79 the km/h are yellow but the Mph goes 0,10,20,30,40,50,60,70,85. In 80 and 81 the km/h are in yellow and the Mph goes 5,15,25,35,45,55,65,75,85 In 82 on up the km/h are in blue. The only year LTD Country Squire that came with a Sail mirror, that specific bumper and that speedometer was the 1980.

60buick ◊ 2020-07-23 21:30	Not true. PRN(OD)DL was not used, at least not from 79-87. And PRN(OD)D1 was not used until 1984. You are correct that 1980 was the 1st year for the AOD transmission. It was an option. The C4 was still standard behind the 302 and 351 until 1982 when the AOD became standard equipment. If your still not convinced the Truckster was not a 79, it had the base vinyl interior in "sand". That was a new color for 1980. The 1979 LTD used the color "camel". It was almost yellow, a very different color. I'll break down the speedometer changes year by year 79-82 to clear it up. 1979 - Ford made 5 clusters. They offered a deluxe cluster with trip meter and a base cluster w/o. They offered each in standard (mph) and Metric (kph) for export plus an LEO cluster. 1) base cluster It read, 5,10,20,30,40,55,60,70,85 Yellow secondary numerals - orange needle 2) base cluster metric It read, 0,20,40,60,80,100,120,140,180 Yellow secondary numerals - orange needle 3) deluxe cluster standard (Same as 1) 4) deluxe cluster metric (Same as 2) 5) LEO certified cluster (Kind of their own thing not important here) Gear range faceplate read PRND21 (79-81) Fuel Gauge said "Fuel" (79-80) 1980 - Ford restyled the standard clusters with new numerals on the faceplate.The metric clusters were identical 79-80 1) base cluster standard It now reads,5,15,25,35,45,55,65,75,85 Yellow secondary numerals - orange needle. (This is the cluster that appears on screen.) 2) deluxe cluster standard It now reads,5,15,25,35,45,55,65,75,85 Yellow secondary numerals - orange needle There were 2 gear range faceplates in 80. The PRND21 was used in C4 equiped cars (79-81). (The Truckster had this faceplate.) The AOD cars had one that read PRN(OD)31 (used 1980-1983) The fuel gauge was the same 79-80 1981 - Ford restyled the faceplate. The 79-80 had triangles for turn indicator lamps, they are now arrows with a white border. The idiot lights got a little refresh as well. 1) base cluster standard Same as 1980 other than the updated faceplate. 2) base cluster metric Same as 79-80 other than the updated faceplate. 3) deluxe cluster standard Same as 1980 other that the updated faceplate. 4) deluxe cluster metric Same as 79-80 other that the updated faceplate. The gear range faceplates offered are identical to 1980 The fuel gauge recieved updated artwork and no longer reads "fuel" and has a little picture of a gas pump. (81-up) 1982 - Ford reused the 81 faceplate but updated the look. The secondary numerals are now blue and the needle is white. It will change very little until 87 and 89 is the last year the cluster is used. I totally forgot about the (OD)3L in 80-83. The color of the secondary numerals was something I knew about form the Pontiac Trans Am, when comparing my 79 to the 77 in Smokey and the Bandit., but I had forgotten they were different on Fords too.
