It is not se heavily modified, I think. It still looks like a normal station wagon, except the grill & headlights.

This '79 Ford Country Squire was modified by Customizer and Hot Rod builder Barris Kustoms. The people that also built the original batmobile. It is referred to as "the family truckster"

Actually the idea was to create an absurd vehicle that went along with the rest of the plot. The uglier and more gaudy the better. You couldn't find too many production cars tht would have this much of an impact. If they used a normal car it probably wouldn't have much attention as the Truckster did. (i.e. The location of the gas filler or the airbag that went off at odd times).

By the way, I think this could be important enough to have five stars. Comments?

Clark orginally ordered an antarctic-blue "Super Sports Wagon" with optional family fun pack.

By the way, if they ever make another Vacation movie, I think the car should be a heavily modified Hummer by making fun of the vehicle's poor gas mileage and sheer size.

I can actually picture in my mind, seeing Clark driving something like that… along with
all the crazy things he would do to it and with it. It would probably get totaled toward
the end of the film, if the Hummer made it that far with the way Clark drives.

If I remember well, for the French version they stupidly translated that by the equivalent of "sports car", which was somewhat not logical for a family car... (but as I saw the movie long time ago, I am not sure)

Nah, the H2 isn't as ridiculous. It's too small, plus it can survive off-road conditions much better.

There's a lot of retro-America in the look and name of this car. Wagon Queen is similar to Speed Queen, the maker of washing machines, and that crown emblem makes me think of Frigadaire.

You bring up a good point. 1979-1980 was the only year for the slotted front bumper. But is it something we can really go on given how heavily modified this vehicle is?

I remember as a kid mulling over that car, trying to figure out what it was! I knew that it was primarily a Ford. I finally resolved to think that it was something from Ford of Europe---until I knew better, of course.

Please, 79, 80, 81 whatever, the Ford LTD Country Squire Wagon was ugly no matter what year it was produced. Sure, it could carry alot of gear, drove fairly well, but, when Barris got a hold of it, and made the "the family truckster", they turned something already awful into something alot worse. Better still, didn't anyone find it odd that the second set of headlights/tailights never worked? :)

I went to a Route 66 car show and there was a replica of this Ford LTD Country Squire. It even had the luggage strapped to the top and a doll with a blanket over its head signifying Aunt Edna.
