When Stanley picks it up it is a 1951 Studebaker Champion. When it fall apart on the bridge it transforms into a 1950 Studebaker Commander.

no it was a 1951 when it fell apart on the bridge. the 1950 studebakers had 2 chrome strips on the front above the two grilles. it was a 1951 all the way through. and i think it was a studebaker landcruiser they were the most common 50-51 studebaker 4 doors

Main pix does show 1951 style spinner while 3rd thumbnail shows a 1950 unit.
(It is NOT a Land Cruiser, which had rear door window vents)

I agree with Commander 57, the vehicle could only be a Commander or Champion which shared the same body in 1951. I believe that TWO vehicles were used in the movie (one running & one fall apart)and that all identifying trim was removed from both vehicles to hide that fact. However, they did not change the bullet nose (or spinner) because the difference is not very apparent in the dark.

In 1951 Studebaker decided to use the same bodies for both the Commander and the Champion. This may have been a mistake because the Champion 6 cylinder was designed for a lighter vehicle, although they looked similar prior to 1951. As a result Stude Champions got a reputation for being underpowered. I LOVE THIS WEB SITE!!!!

I am taking Champion off the ID here as no way to tell Champion vs Commander from views shown.
Thumbnails 3 and 4 appear to depict a '51 with a '50 style grill spinner. (Note one piece windshield and '51 style bumper guards.)

The film stars two different cars - Studebaker Commander State 4-door sedan (1951) and Studebaker Land Cruiser (1950).
Articles about this car, I wrote here - http://www.drive2.ru/b/1239673/

The 1951 does not carry State trim. Note the rubber gravel guard and lack of front fender top ornaments. All State-trimmed models had stainless steel guards and front fender ornaments. This appears to be a Regal with the rocker trim missing (you can see where it was originally mounted).

The '50 Land Cruiser is wearing 1951 style front bumper guards.

Some really nice photos in your link!

A charger in a junkyard, but if it weren't for it the scenes with "The Loaner" wouldn't be funny like they are. It must have come from the same factory as Medusa's Swamp Mobile, LOL.

I've heard this is one of the actual cars used in the movie, and this site says it's a Champion. It looks like it must've been restored.

This is supposed to be the "fall-apart" version (per Cinema Vehicle Services), being auctioned off in June by Profiles in History:

That last thumbnail definitely depicts a '50 grille and spinner design as well as a 2-piece rear window, yet it has a one-piece windshield.
