Previous similar vehicles were listed as "Meyers Manx" make -- Last edit: 2006-03-01 10:13:07 |

This is not an original Manx. From approx. 250000 Buggys was built are only approx. 6000 original Manx buggys. And we can't say this is this or this. I think better is this: as Make: KitCar, VW-KitCar, VW-Buggy, DuneBuggy as Model and Extra info:VW-Buggy, DuneBuggy, Meyers Manx, APAL VW Kits as Buggy or somethings from the 70': http://www.vw-buggy.at/images/techdaten.jpg |

Or we could "Custom" as make for these |

I think it is a Maplex. |

"Custom" is for Bikes or US ShowCars but not for Dune Buggys or the lot of (unknown) english KitCars, i think. Google: KitCars Link to "images.google.de" Google: Custom Link to "images.google.de" -- Last edit: 2006-03-01 18:37:02 |

The word 'custom' means that something is made to special order, tailored to the customers wishes. With cars and bikes it usually is a donor vehicle which is heavily modified. As long as the donor vehicle is still identifyable this should be named. If it was so heavily modified that even Jun cannot tell which bike was used, then we could use 'Custom Made'. Some manufacturers use the word custom in their name, therefore I would not use it on its own. 'Kit Car' (two words, please) only describes that a car from a manufacturer has to be assembled DIY style at home. It comes as CKD (completely knocked down) kit with an IKEA style brochure (if you are lucky) and you build it yourself. These kits ALWAYS have a maker and model name. I would not use 'Kit Car' (or some equivalent) only because we haven't found the name. Otherwise we will soon see names like 'Vintage Racecar' or 'Oldtimer'. So far I don't know who the maker of this car is. I cannot confirm 'Maplex' -- Junkman, have you got any pictures as reference? |

I've just searched long on Google ...and cannot find any Maplex resembling this buggy.! |

I think we should use the base car for the make if known and model as custom. I don't like custom, or Kit Car for make. Why can't be just leave "make" blank and put whatever it is in model and extra info? That tells all we really know for most of these things and should get them out of unknowns. |

This one looks like a VW engine in the rear but the car seems a little long for a VW chassis. |

Then it is not accessible from the makes list... (well, that's not a major problem, but...) |
◊ 2006-03-02 10:26 |
At least the steering wheel is VW ![]() Even though most Buggies used Volkswagen chassis and engine, there are still quite a few other makes around (Hillman Imp, Fiat, Convair,...). Therefore I would not use Volkswagen as maker, but rather try to find the name of the body maker. Leaving the name field empty might be a problem with the database. I don't like 'unknown' myself, but this is probably the best solution at the moment. |

As most of theses "kit cars" which have a fiberglass body on a VW chassis are commonly named "Buggy", why don't you make a Buggy field just for them ? |
◊ 2007-03-04 12:15 |
What do you mean? That's what we did, as it is listed as "Dune Buggy" |

Je pense qu'il voulait parler de la catégorie de véhicule, pas de la marque... ![]() |

Let me clear up the mystery - the CBF license plate for Jeffrey's Bay/ Humansdorp in ZA gave it away for me. It is called a Kestrel (see http://img389.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pdvd1005rg.jpg), built by a ZA company on a VW Beetle floor pan (it is actually a complete Beetle with a different body). We have two in our town - let me check the manufacturer (the plate on the front is a bit feint and I can't quite remember) and get back. -- Last edit: 2007-07-08 23:30:18 |
