Oh dear ... the main picture is of an Austin A30, 1953+; look at the protruding sill. The Standard in the thumbnails, if it is an Eight, must be a 1957+ 'Gold Star' as it has an opening boot-lid; but if the registration is genuine I think it might be a Ten that has lost its grille, as IIRC AFT registrations (from Tynemouth) date back to about 1956.

Are you sure Chris, because I think it's the same car, look at the position of the blue Herald in both pictures.

No, Jean-Marc, the main picture, the one in front of the prison; the little black car in front of the A40 Devon. No way is that a Standard; the shape of the rear window is wrong, and as I said the protruding rounded sill under the doors is characteristic of an A30. Sorry it took nine months to notice it ... And about the Standard... Wasn't it only the Ten that had an opening boot ? (I cannot check because I'm not at home, at the moment).

No, the Eight Gold Star, introduced in 1957, had that luxury too: (from Wikipedia 'Standard Eight')'The 1954 De luxe got wind up windows and the Gold Star model of 1957 an opening boot lid. From mid 1955 all the Eights finally got wind up windows.'
Not to worry, Mike, I thought as you did until today! ;)

I'm impressed, ;) AFT started in 1957 actually, ending with AFT999 in September 1958 (from my data).

I was working from memory ... my mother and I, both exiled Geordies, went back to Newcastle-upon-Tyne in August 1958, and I remember noticing that FT registrations hadn't advanced very far ... :D Maybe Tynemouth folks bought their cars in Newcastle?
