did any of these survive the series?? I was once told they used 7 different firebirds for the show. Garner was a good driver and did alot of the driving. |

This 1974 Firebird is Rockford's car during the first season of the show. In this image, you can see the turn signal directly below the headlight: -- Last edit: 2010-08-02 00:26:06 |

My favorite year of Firebird! Thanks for all the pictures. Jim really beat on the poor thing didn't he? The marker under the "esprit" badge indicates that this car had a 400 c.i. engine, decent size engine for so small a car. |

Supposedly the spec was altered from Esprit to look like a Formula by fitting a hood without scoops & changing the badges. This meant it was a car that looked cheap enough for Jim to own, but had enough power to cope in the chase scenes. |

Letter in Autocar (15 Jan 2020 issue) discussing how Jim Garner was an excellent driver who did the stunt driving for Grand Prix also mentions that the Rockford Files TV Firebird - presumably this one but no mention of which series - was "actually a full-house Trans Am, minus its body addenda and made to look like a modest Esprit model". |
