Thunderbird wrecks are seen twice during the canal chase. In reality, there are no car wrecks in Los Angeles' canals. I am pretty sure that the same Thunderbird wreck was used twice.

Scene #1:

Scene #2 as depicted in the main capture. Notice how the front end is gone after being taken out in scene #1:

Hey ford guy?, I wanna go with you and say that it wouldn't be a coincidence that the same Thunderbird would be in those canals - I think this is a good example of a continuity error.

There may not be any car wrecks in the LA canals, but this film was set in the future. The film was set in 1995, while being released in 1991. It is meant to show how society degrades over the years toward the end of man.

I'm pretty sure the wrecks were just included for dramatic action purposes, not to send a message. It may be 1995, but they depicted it using an unchanged 1991 Los Angeles.

@jc8825, @Ford Guy: It could easily be both. A running theme in James Cameron movies is the relationship between man and technology, according to Cameron himself. It works both ways.

This car was in a fire. Evidence all around the windows. Also notice we're being watched by someone in the upper-left portion of the pic, behind the fence.
