McQueens' Mustang is similar to one my cousin bought in 1967. He bought one of the first 100 produced which were supposed to have the 390 V8. He claimed that his had a 427 like the rest of the first 100 big block models. It was the fastest car I have ever been in!

The '68 Mustangs used in the movie (all four of them) where slightly customised on the outside. Underneath, they were massively reinforced to withstand the jumps. The engines were severely hopped up too on two of them, because the completely stock Dodge Charger 440 R/T was so much quicker, that it outran the stock Mustangs by such a margin, that the chase scene couldn't have been filmed at all. The Charger also withstood the jumps without any modifications, but it lost 7 hubcaps during the chase scene :-)

The four Mustangs used in the film all had different engines. The one used for the high speed shots was a 390 cid big block while the other 3 were all dressed up 289 cid Mustangs. Also an interesting fact is that when the Charger slams into the gas station, if you watch close enough, you actually see the Charger miss the station completely! The explosion was set off anyway by the charges because this shot could really only be done in one take.

I had always heard there were only two Mustangs used for this film...both were 390 four speed GTs with customized exteriors and deluxe interiors.

One was destroyed making the film, the other supposedly is in some guy's barn in Kentucky and he refuses to sell it. The surviving car was used mainly for interior shots and scenes prior to the chase.

That´s correct. They used only two Mustangs and two Chargers. The Mustangs had consecutive VINs, both GT with the 390ci engine and manual 4speed. Ther´s no doubt that both Chargers and one of the Mustangs had been scrapped.

It was mentioned that the mustang had to be modified because it was completely blown away by the charger, this is partially true, partially not. The cars were designed for two different reasons, one for the track, the other for the dragstrip. The mustang had to be modified to keep up with the charger on the highway, but completely blew the charger away in the city scenes. If you listen to the movie, McQueen wasn't even on the gas in the city scenes.

Most of McQueens driving was him driving, with a little bit of it being Bud Elkins. The Charger was actually driven by Bill Hickman, who was in reality one of the greatest stunt drivers of the time.(Or ever)He also played the part of the bad guy who was driving it.

That's because - as was mentioned earlier - the Charger was hampered with skinny wheels and tires for filming based on its earlier track dominance. Besides which, listening to the movie is useless, since the Mustang's engine sounds were dubbed in.

boo!

its terrible that Ford is remaking the thunderbird, mustangs and all other classic era cars (the only remotely acceptable one being the GT but it still does not surpass how much the original GT stepped up Ford in a big way with supercar like that, hench the ferrari killer)

BUT its especially worse when they remake a classic car from an even more classic film such as Steven McQueen's BULLITT

No...what's FAR worse is remaking Bullitt with Brad Pitt as Lt. Frank Bullitt, which rumours have been circulating around for this year. I'll bet they'll use a Bullitt Mustang and a 2008 Charger too. If Steve McQueen was alive today, he'd wring the necks of everyone responsible for this impending, catastrophic disaster...

I don't entirely hate Brad Pitt, but come on, trying to replace Steve McQueen in Bullitt? What's next? Christian Bale as Virgil Hilts? :(

Worst case scenario, the new Bullitt would be a Bruckheimer/Bay collaboration. The chase (*cough* CGI *cough*) would have indestructible/self-repairing cars (we'd never complain about the hubcaps in the original again), the gunfight at the airport would have a couple of full-automatic weapons thrown in the mix, Bullitt's girlfriend (Jolie cameo) would spend half the movie topless, and *ugh* come 2012 we'd be treated to a sequel.

Kill me.

Steve McQueen did a short part of the high speed chase. (The scene where he came off the road, looked outside of his window, and started up again). The director did not want him to get hurt doing the chase scene, so his action was cut down to that one scene. This was included in the commentary on the DVD version of the movie.
