Not true! This BMW Z3 was barely used at all in the movie. 2 scenes that's it. The picture above was a pretty cool scene, illustrating the Z3's special gadgets and weapons. Very clever. And one very minor driving scene - in which James Bond does NONE of the driving - a total and complete waste of this BMW. What a major disapointment! The media and BMW made such a big hype over the Z3 in this movie - Ha, what a joke. Liars!

Q: Right, now pay attention 007. First, your new car; BMW, agile, five foward gears, all points radar, self-destruct system and naturally, all the usual refinements. Now this I'm particulary proud of; behind the headlights, stinger missiles!
Bond: Excellent, just the thing for unwinding after a rough day at the office.
Q: Need I remind you, 007, that you have a licence to kill, not to break the traffic laws.

It also features a parachute, which is seen being deployed in Q's workshop. After the Q scene we later see him driving it in the third act of the film in the beautiful Carribean countryside, with Natalya beside him. Then a light aircraft flown by Jack Wade lands right in front of them on the road. Wade lets Bond have the plane, while he takes the car. "Don't press any of the buttons" Bond warns. "Just gonna go bombin' around in it" replies Wade.

I believe this car was released a little while after this film came out.

Very impressive comments and quotes G-Mann. It's nice to see someone write as much as I do.

Goldeneye is one of my very favourite Bond films, though I did have to get the video out (from my shelf not the video shop) to get those quotes right.

Also with the Z3, the only engine available at first was the weedy 1.9 litre engine, with I believe took it from 0-60 in a rather unsporty 10 seconds, nowadays most family cars can beat that! The 1.9 Z3 (you could tell it by the single exhaust) was such a hairdresser's car.

Bond would have had a really hard time evading baddie in this, and there was no evidence in this film of it actually having stinger missiles except for what Q said in the dialogue (he probably get behind schedule and didn't bother putting them in the end). That "Five-foward gears" bit is so funny, all manual cars made in the last 20 years have had at least five foward gears, but Desmond Llewellyn always had trouble with the technological details in his lines, apparentely the man never had much grasp of modern technology, God rest his soul, so it was probably one of few bits he could remember.

Note to admins, leave the 3-star rating as it is. 2 scenes and less than 3 minutes of screentime does not constitute a 4 star rating!

The film did help with sales. Tremendously.

I certainly remember the hype around the Z3 because it was "Bond's new car", it was very sleek and sexy at the time (it still looks nice now), but to be honest his old Aston Martin had far more memorable role in this film. Bond hardly "used" this car at all, he drives it down a dirt track in Cuba (Puerto Rico in reality) than immediately swaps it for a plane!

desmond llewelen also helped BMW to unveil that car in 1995.

The first Z3's were equipped with a 16 valve 1.9 units developing 140 hp, later replaced by a 8 valve version of the same engine that had power output of about 115 hp.
Weighing 1150 kg this nimble machine could easily accelerate to 100 km/h in less than 8,5 seconds.

Well I remember hearing that the base Z3 could only do 0-60 in 10 seconds or something like that.

I dont think it is build in the USA, its a pre-production car mady in Munich

The original 1.9 Z3 performance figures were as pj says. The later 1.8 (1999/2000) and 1.9 8v (2000+) versions did take over 10seconds to reach 60 as G-MANN recalls. Not exactly a serious sports car in base trim.

Ewww, I had forgotten how slow these really were. Our 325i E36 sedan would clip 60 mph in 8.0 seconds, and it had the four-speed slush box.

Some people claimed a zero-to-60 time around the mid 7 second mark for the 325, but we could never get those numbers.

The Australian 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) times for the 1.9L Z3 are as follows (these figures are provided by BMW themselves):

manual: 9.5s
automatic: 10.7s

The 2.8L had a 0-100 time of 7.3s

In 1999, the 1.9L engine was replaced with a 2.0L, which slightly reduced acceleration times to 9.1s and 10.0s respectively.

A 2.2L and 3.0L straight six arrived in 2000 which replaced the 2.0L and 2.8L. It's times were 8.2s and 8.6s, and 6.3s and 6.4s respectively.

Keep in mind that as these times are 0-62, the 0-60 times will be slightly less.

There was a limited edition looking like the one in the movie, or, by choice, with light brown interieur, and some additional equipment.
They flopped, and are now so sought after that people "fake them together".

I saw this vehicle on the Bond Cars Special and they said that the vehicle is what a hairdresser would drive.
