Good riddens to the worst Mercedes ever built.

Why is it the worst?

It IS the worst! You may ask many Mercedes lovers around the world and many of them will rate the W210 as junk that doesn´t deserve the three-pointed star any more. Heavily reduced production costs lead to the poorest quality you could ever imagine: crappy fuel engines, moody injection pumps, many electrical demons throughout the car, suicidal generators, fragile displays, rattling and struggling automatic transmissions and the best of all: RUST - as far as the eye can reach. It spoils nothing to say that the last E Class you could buy with a clear conscience was the W124.

Wikipedia says: "The W210 E-class is a reliable and safe car, with very few major mechanical problems[citation required]." I wonder how long they are seeking for a citation to prove that statement and I bet it will take a little more time to find one. :D

Is it really that bad? Surely the ML, R-Class, B-Class and A-Class are lesser Mercs than this? Although I'm not an expert on the technical side of cars, I still would like to own one of these one day.

Yeah... the W210 was a bit of a disappointment compared to the W124. The similar era BMW 5-Series E39 or Audi A6 C5 are much better cars.

At the time, Mercedes-Benz was taken over by Jurgen Schrempp who is quite possibly THE worst businessman in all of automotive history. Know the "Daimler-Chrysler - The merge of equals"? It was Schrempp's idea. Mercedes under Schrempp's reign of cost-cutting mediocrity suffered a huge drop in quality.

You might be right about the 5-series, but I'd never chose an Audi over a Merc, I've always thought Audis are bland and lack presence compared to Mercs.

But wouldn't you rather have a newer W210 than an old, more worn W124? Although I think the W124 has a more "classic" design, it took me a while to get used to the circular headlights of the W210, but I think a W210 would be more impressive than an old W124, and it has a nicer, more modern interior.

It's not like the W210 was catastrophically bad. But it didn't feel as solid like the W124 did.

The W210 has the battery located under the backseat, so there is no way the headlights would still be on when the car explodes.

Not if I had to push it everywhere ... I would rather have the Mercedes E-Klasse [W124] if it were a more reliable machine (and I believe it was superior in that department)
Luxury means nothing when you’re setting on the side of the road waiting for a tow-truck.

Bob King Mercedes’ service department was full of these cars - About 70% of them were brought back (or towed back) for unscheduled repairs.
So I would agree with the statements that these cars were not very reliable.

I've noticed a backlash against this type of Mercedes several times on the internet in recent years. I'm no expert on the technical side of things, however I remember "What Car?" magazine in the UK and others giving it excellent reviews at the time, and they still seem to hold their value pretty well.

Regardless of the quality of the car, it still seems like the styling cues were successful enough that Mercedes still uses similar circular headlamps on several of their new models to this day.

Link to "www.parkers.co.uk"
This STILL gives it an excellent review as a used car, and rates reliability 4 and a half stars out of 5.

When the W 210 came out as the successor of the W 124, it was indeed a crappy car in worst quality. A friend of mine is a taxi-driver in Hamburg. He told me, that their first W 210 Diesel had to be brought to the garage because of defects in average every 1000 km - so per every filling up the tank, one visit in the garage.

But the C-Klasse wasn't better either. A colleague of mine had a brand new one - 13 beakdowns withing 10 months. All for free, because he had the Mercedes-warranty, but it was ugly for him anyways. Once the garagist told him "You better don't leave the town of Dortmund. Otherwise our towing-truck has to make a too long trip". The new price of it was roundabout 60 000 D-Mark (ca.30 000 Euro). After it was too much with the defects, he got a new C-Klasse (for no extra payment). This car was better: only 5 breakdowns in similar time.
Then his Mercedes-expercience has ended. He bought a VW Golf and is still happy with it.

At the same time the drop in quality that Kowalski speaks of happenned, M-B and it's competitors introduced many different costly and complex new electronics.

It think it might be the 2000+ facelifted version (which has different air intake under the front bumper and wing mirrors with indicators).

Despite all the negativity towards the W210, I rather like the Estate version (S210). It's very practical and has a cavernous boot.

One of the Joker's victims killed by any means.

He blew up the Benz to kill the owner (The Judge) as she was one of those who couldn't be paid off by criminals, so they (the criminals) got The Joker to kill her as well as Commissioner Loeb by poisoning his drink but failed to kill Harvey Dent.

I don’t personally see what’s wrong with the W210. It’s one of my favourite E Class generations, (My favourite is the W124)
