I recall they used to call this old model Lancia Scorpion and that the later models where called Monte Carlo :hello:

Quote The Lancia Scorpion is derived from the Lancia Montecarlo. The car is so called because the name Montecarlo was already used in America by Chevrolet.

The Scorpion differs from the Montecarlo in a number of ways:
  • Smaller engine (1800 cc) because the 2 liter unit in the Montecarlo had not passed smog tests.
  • Different bumper (fender) configuration to meet American crash tests.
  • Pop-up headlights

Unlike the Montecarlo, only one production run of Scorpions was made. A total of 1801 were produced between 1976 and 1977.

Since here it is in Europe I guess it is a Monte-Carlo and not a Scorpion. But it is strange: it seems to have running lights on the side, like US-specs cars. Why would they have travelled to Europe the US version of an European car :??:

I checked in the movie, and the car also has US round lights rather than European rectangular lights...

So it is a rare Lancia Scorpion rather than a Monte-Carlo (which is still not so common :D)

i could imagine that using a lancia scorpion (and not the monte carlo) was a pr-campaign for this model for the US.

As an American film,i would imagine all of the cars would have been purchased in the U.S and prepared before filming began and then shipped to France for the scenes filmed there, hence why it is a U.S spec car. They would not have bought the Lancias on set in France.
There's an article on the net about the Laser 917s used in the movie, which were purchased by Disney in April '76 for use in filming later that summer,so i would guess it would have been the same for the Lancias.
Did U.S spec scorpions have the pop up lights featured in the film,or were they added just for the movie? They seem somewhat makeshift-the lights just look like they are hanging through bits of black sugar paper!

These headlights seem to have been made just for the movie, or maybe it was used for race versions ? (if there was any)
All these have "normal" headlights: http://www.lanciamontecarlo.net/Scorpion/Gallery.html

The pop-up light 'door' is used as eye lashes, the headlight is fixed in place, whereas it normally moves with the assembly. However, the pop-up light only moves about 1 inch on the production cars (to meet headlight height requirements). I (like many Scorpion owners) have removed the pop-up assembly in favor of a fixed light setup (in my case quad 5 inch round headlights and a 1982+ Lancia Beta grille).

Do you have a picture of what it looks like with such modification? (just for my curiosity :D)

I found a picture of one antp, just go to http://www.lanciamontecarlo.net/Montecarlo/Gallery_81_02.html

NOTE: The one I provided is a montecarlo, but this is what it would look like on a scorpion.

Nice, it looks very much like 037 Rally with that modification.

There were 3 cars to play that one car in the movie. One for race scenes, one cut up for interior shots and one as a beauty car. Of the 3 cars, only 1 survived. A man in Texas owns the last surviving one from the movie (the race scene one believe it or not). He restored it to the way it was in the movie about a year or 2 ago. He also ownsa Herbie the love bug and the 2 Horace Cars from the 1997 Herbie the love bug remake. They used the American version of the car because the movie was only intended for America and Lancia was banking on the movie to help sell the cars well in America. Unfortuneately, the movie flopped and so did the car.

It's worth noting that the surviving car is also the one that was submerged in water during the movie. Interior was refurbished, and the car was repainted silver. It was recently restored back to its HGTMC scheme.

Actually, it's Montecarlo. Chevrolet already took the name, so Lancia had to make Monte Carlo one complete word.
