Studebaker ceased to produce cars in the United States in December 1963, all 1965 models were made in Canada.

I read that the last U.S. Studebaker came off the line in March of 1964.

The date I have for the last car produced at the South Bend Studebaker plant is December 9, 1963.

This is a Canadian built Studebaker Lark Challenger or Commander of 1964 ( 64 S-F4).The series was indicated on the front fenders , not visible here .It is not a 1965 : in 1965 there were additional vertical slots in the grille. Challengers and Commanders had single headlights whereas the longer wheelbase top of the line Cruiser had dual headlights. The South Bend Indiana factory production ended december 1963 and production moved to Studebaker's factory in Hamilton Ontario Canada in the first quarter of 1964.Studebaker Canada produced 17614 units of this model year. 1964 was also the last year in which Studebaker six and V8 engines were used. They were replaced by GM units in 1965.

There is partially correct info above.
Let's be specific about the headlights.
ALL 1965 Studebakers had dual headlights.

In 1964, all Daytonas and Cruisers had dual headlights.
Challengers and Commanders could be purchased with either single or dual lights.

The last South Bend-built Studebaker was produced in December of 1963.

There is no difference in the grille between '64's and '65's.

Yes, 1965 Studebakers carried GM engines. My club magazine indicates they were designed by Chevy but built by the Pontiac division.

Further info.

No Challengers were built in Canada. That model (along with all Avantis, GT Hawks, heavy-duty vehicles, taxis, pickup trucks and convertibles) were discontinued effective with the South Bend shut down in December of 1963.
This has to be a '64 owing to single headlamps. With no hood ornament, it should be a Challenger and was South Bend built.
(The "Lark" name was used in early '64 advertising but never appeared on the cars themselves. A Lark bird ornament was found on the sail panels of Challengers only.)
Listing should be changed to "1964 Studebaker Challenger".

Further research through my club magazines leads me to alter my second paragraph above - BOTH the Challenger and Commander had the single/dual lamp option in 1964, not just the Commander.

As far as grille bars are concerned, I noted years ago that early '64 advertising appeared to show cars with only horizontal bars. From many field observations over the years (including when there were still many on the road) I cannot recall ever seeing a car with a grille that actually looked like that. I feel it was either an illustration error or a planned grille that was never actually used in production.
Have also never seen that grille in hundreds of meet issue photos in my club magazine.
Regardless, it is definitely NOT a way to tell '65 models from '64's.
