note: the 2nd thumb was from a different scene (i'm guessing it's the same taxi?)

It looks like a 1946-48 Ford, but the grille is a bit like those of a Mercury. Was there a Ford based taxi make?

Not only the grille, but the backlights are 46-48 Mercury. Yet it lacks some chrome on the fenders and trunk. I'll check with the Canadian Mercury Monarchs ?

After checking, I believe that the first car (main pic and 1st thumb) is a 1942 Ford. The grille is much more like it.
The car on the 2nd thumb would be a 1942 Lincoln, more probably a 1942-48 Mercury, stripped of its trim on the trunk. And not a Monarch, they had Ford backlights, being mostly Fords with a different grille.

This is a 1946-8 Canadian Mercury 114 4 door sedan. In Canada after the second world war there were 2 types of Mercury :the 118 ( for 118 inch wheelbase) similar to the US model and the purely Canadian Mercury 114 ( for 114 inch wheelbase ).The latter one as this in the picture was in fact a Ford with Mercury like trim , but quite different from the Mercury 118.For example ,it had round standing lights under the headlights, a smaller Mercury style grille to accomodate Ford's front end ( visible on the left thumbnail), rectangular horizontal taillights but simpler than on US Mercurys and an oblong oval Mercury script above the number plate ( both visible on the right thumbnail ).However the double fender trim strips are missing here and this can be confusing. The dealership in Canada was split up after the war.The aim of the Mercury 114 was to offer Mercury-Lincoln dealers a cheaper car to sell than the American type. Ford dealers were offered a more expensive car to sell and this was the Monarch a badge engineered Mercury 118.In 1949 ,the Mercury 114 became the Meteor and the Monarch name was continued.
