This body was also available as BMW 1600 in 1965 and 1966. |

Indeed, and I wasn´t suggesting that this could be one of them. Just info |

1800...indeed, it has the chrome beadings on the sides (middle and underneath). But the engine was not a 1500cc but a 1773cc engine, the model appeared in BMW range in 1964, and no difference went till 1969 (new 4cyl engine, and new radiator grill)...so have to change the year as 1964 beeing the starting date of this model. |

...i forgot, you're right Kowalski, this BMW is a taxi which drive Paul Newman to a farm for an appointment with "Pi" operator chief (the guy we see on the tractor) |

The starting date of the 1800 was 9/1963 and in this Film you see the 1966 facelift model. The first BMW 1800 was without chrome beadings on the sides (on the Doors) and look likes BMW 1600. |

yes Sept 1963, "année modèle 1964"...as the 1500 which was shown at Francfort 1961 september, but production began in mid 1962, therefore the year to be taken should be 1964. Up to my bibliography (the very small part I have at the moment) it was provided with chrome beadings, and there is not any difference between facelift of 1964 and 1966 models... |

We could label it as 1965 then |

...I suppose Ralph has more precise information than what I have here " Toutes les voitures du Monde des années 60" de René et Serge Bellu aux Editions Rétroviseurs... |

Because this was filmed in the States and not in Germany, it could be a 1965 BMW 1600 (export model) see the US catalog of 1965 http://mclellansautomotive.com/photos/B20538.jpg -- Last edit: 2006-06-18 04:37:07 |

This is not a 1500 or a 1600 BUT AN 1800! Partly because the 1800 was the only model (concerning the 'Neue Klasse' these years) that had a chrome piece beneath the doors, and also chrome around the waist line. I agree that some 1600's had some chrome (aluminium to be presice...) around the waist line, but never as much as the 1800, and the 1500 had almost no chrome at all. And partly because the 1800 outnumbered the 1500 and the 1600. The 1500 was made in 24.000, the 1600 in 10.000 and the 1800 in 159.000. Here're some good pictures of a 1500 http://www.automobile-catalog.com/car/1964/77255/bmw_1500.html and of a 1800 http://www.classiccars-forsale.com/bmw-1800-1968/ . That is a 09/63 - 07/68 BMW 1800. (64-66 because of the release date of the film...) Edit: As far as I understand this car was sold in USA and thus "made for USA", but I didn't know it had any special features to deserve that epithet /vehicle.php?id=502000 . Edit 2: I forgot to mention why I should be considered trustworthy. Roughly two years ago I almost bought a 1966 BMW 1600 Neue Klasse, but decided after much agony to relinquish as it demanded a full respray, a lot of welding and plenty of rare spare parts. But before I did so I found it was a comfortable car also for me (6'5"), it had a very beautiful facia and an immense boot. It was also very well made, apart from the rust, as it had cross flow, headers, IRS and a gearbox made by Getrag, but most importantly it had hemispherical combustion chambers. The latter might not seems to be of importance, but when fitted to U.S. cars it had HEMI written all over it. That is what I really like about these cars; technically advanced but not boasting over it. -- Last edit: 2012-06-05 01:09:51 |
