This sequence is a dramatisation of a famous Darwin Award that was later proved to be an urban legend. Harvey Wedstone (David Arquette) attaches a JATO rocket (Jet Assisted Take Off, designed to be fitted to heavy cargo planes) to his Chevy.

"The JATO rocket is designed to add thrust to overloaded transport planes like C-130s, which, fully loaded, weigh in excess of 200 tonnes. Harvey's Chevy weight less than two."

So the results aren't suprising:

Travelling at over 300mph Harvey tries to brake, but this is no use, the brakes pads are burnt away and the tires melt, leaving 2 miles of skidmarks along the highway. The car starts to get ripped apart:

He has to swerve to avoid on oncoming car, he hits a bank and the car goes airborne, reaching a height of 300 feet, than he crashes into a mountain:

Notice this badge, is this a trim level or something made up?

It's most likely something that was made up, or from another vehicle.

Who was it that said "people that stupid deserve to die"? :D

That's the whole point of the Darwin Awards, they are "awards" given to people who die in such ridiculous ways through sheer lack of common sense, that it is considered a good thing that they've died because they've removed themselves from the gene pool. This idea kind of relates to Darwinism, that the weak, less advanced people get left out in the process of natural selection.

(In reference to the pic of the speedometer above) Imagine just how fast he could've gone if he had TAKEN THE CAR OUT OF PARK!!! :rotfl: :)

Well that's a bit of a blooper, isn't it! In the film he accelerated the car to 50mph before he activated the rocket, so he would have have to have been in drive for that. Unless he was trying to slow the car down by putting it back in park (so it's more likely they've just made a blooper).

BTW, it's a 1990 9C1 model. The badge on the fender is fake. The plate number is also invalid.

Why 1990 specifically?

Color of turn indicators?

No, it's not that. I think it may have to do with the seatbelt, but I'm curious about why it's a 1990 specifically.

Did they state that it was a 1990 in movie? Maybe that’s why? (I haven’t seen the film, so I don’t know)

It's the seatbelt. They moved it to the door in '90.

Yes, it was 1967 Chevrolet Impala but when Mythbusters did this myth, they used a 1966 model and they proved that the JATO rocket when activated could not make the car go 300 feet off the ground, it just made it go even faster.
