1971 (No 'Wing Glasses'. 1969/70 have them,'71 didn't?) and it has the USA Oval/US Forces in Germany plates. (Yeah, like I'm not going to mention that?? ) -- Last edit: 2018-03-31 23:03:06 |

What's funny is I have a pair of these hanging on my wall (1973-82 US Forces in Germany license plates, they were once on a 1975 Ford LTD 4dr...my parents car?)and I've had to explain to a lot of people who've seen them just what they are,and where they are from? |

My impression is, that in the USA these oval country-stickers were and are never used. When I spotted cars with these stickers over there, they were all brought by US-GIs from abroad to the USA. Normally they are mandatory (in Europe not any more since the licenseplates in Euro-design), when you travel abroad. But well, except Canada and Mexico there is no realistic possibility for US-drivers to travel to other countries. Those tourist's US-cars, you see here in Europe, mainly have the USA-oval on the back. |

That's the reason 'we' had them as well,so we could also cross borders, too? There were also Canadian Forces in Germany as well, they also had a 'special' plate (white/red lettering, maple leaf in the center space,'Canada' across the top) and oval?(CDN) My understanding is the USA ovals were done away with about 1991,and about 10 years later so were the 'USA' license plates (Which by then were white/black lettering?) first with odd Kreis codes, like 'QQ' or 'HK',they now just issue standard issue German plates (Like 'BIR' for Kreis Birkenfeld (Baumholder),'KL' for Kreis Kaiserslautern...which are two of the places we still have large bases, etc to the GI's?) Was told it was to make 'our' cars stand out less to potential terrorists? (Right, like a Tahoe or Grand Marquis or similar wouldn't stand out in Germany....just like that Plymouth Station Wagon above wouldn't??) Italy and Holland also had special plates, too. Italy had "AFI" ('American Forces,Italy'. White/Black lettering. The letter actually said what base/post the car was from, like 'V' for Vicenza,'U' for Udine (Aviano AFB),etc?) and Holland had "AFC" ("American Forces,Central"...But they were standard Dutch sized plates, and actually used "NL" ovals on theirs!!) |

By "Wing Glasses" are you referring to the vent windows? |

@Buc84: sorry, you misunderstand me. I don't mean the private cars of US-GIs abroad, I mean the cars running in the USA. |

No, our license plates include the name of the state or province, so there was no need to add country stickers |
