White 4000 my arse, White-Autocar more like it. 4000's were squarer, had the same cab as a 9000, Road Boss and early Western Star. |

It is definately a White 4000 or 9000. The hood looks long enough to be a 4000 but a 4000 should have the air cleaner on the left side. 9000's had it on the right side. (4000 was the long hood and 9000 was the short hood) Sometimes guys would update the non-turbo 220 Cummins with a bigger turbo-charged Cummins, and then move the air cleaner to the right side to make it easier to hook up to the turbo. This is the same cab that was used on the WC whites that preceded the 4000/9000 series from the mid to late '50's. I am guessing this to be about a 1960. Both the early 4000 and 9000 used this cab. By the mid '60's whites did use the Autocar "driver" cab also known as the "corporate" cab used by all the companies you mentioned. Then toward the late '60's they got squared off like you mentioned loosing the butterfly hood and going with a tilting fiberglass hood. I don't want to appear like a know-it-all with this, but there are three of these 4000's in my yard that I am restoring one out of and I have done alot of research. |
