The red car is a Humber! It is a 1906 Humber 16/20 HP Roi des Belges tourer, registration LN 42, and one of only two of these cars to survive. It was part of the Rootes car collection in the 1940s and 1950s. When the collection was broken up in the late 1950s, the car went via Whelmans to Neil Engert in North London. Neil loaned the car to be used in the film "Those magnificent Men...". It appearred as the car of "Colonel Count Manfred von Holstein", played by the late great Gert Frobe, who is the gent on the right hand side of the picture in the grey greatcoat. It was in this car that bthe details of his duel with the French pilot were agreed - "balloons and blunderbusses". I would love to know who played the part of the chauffer (seen in the blue uniform just in front of Gert Frobe) and of course, although I have a copy of the film itself, I would like to get hold of any stills. The car was stored after the film until last year, when I was lucky enopugh to buy it at auction. It is now running again. Roger Harrison, The Humber Register, 10th November 2009. |

Roger, I joined this forum to answer your query ref the staff car driver from the film. Fred Dean aka Billy Dean was a neighbour of mine when I was a young lad growing up in Sydenham S.E London. He was a bit part actor and stuntman and had small parts in various films. He used to bring home film props for us kids on the estate to play with. He had a son and daughter but when I left home in 1974 never returned so don't know what happened to him. Should you require any other info about him ie films he was in etc please pm me. Regards Glenn |

Roger Your car was also seen in the'60s classic "The Avengers", Season 4, episode 3 where it was driven by John Steed. Like this film, it does not have headlamps, and in one shot, there are two small holes in the cowl...remnants of a removed badge? |
