Not sure of the model but looks like a 4x6 based on front axle. |

Definitely a 6x4: straight axle can be seen and small hub in the front. Also, definitely has the 2-Stroke GM/Detroit; might be a 6V53 by the way it screams. |

1949-51 HC-Series / 1952-55 600-/700-/800-Series / 1952-59 900-Series. The 1949-50 one-piece door window makes it a HC-Something, the tandem gives it a W in the model name, and the 7-bar grille indicates one of the heaviest models (1). → HC-Series _____ 1: gasoline HCW-9x0 or Diesel HDCW-9x0: 900, 940, 950 and 970 models were available, but I don't know for now which were gasoline models or Diesel ones nor if all models could have the tandem rear axle. |

These trucks were built with the inline 6-71 only. |

The only thing we can say for sure is this is a late-1949 to 1959 GMC 900 series. From '49 to '50, the basic model number was HDC-900; from '51 to '59, it was D900-67. Specific equipment we can't know for sure from the photo modifies the model number. If the tandem rears are factory original dual-drive (no guarantee they are), would be '49-'50 model HDCW-950 or 970, or '51-'53 D950-67/D970-67, or '54-'59 D970-67. Edit: I just noticed the overhead-mounted windshield wipers - this narrows it down to 1954-1959. -- Last edit: 2022-11-03 07:25:55 |

General spotting tip: The top of the grille is considered part of the surround and not a "grille bar". In the "H" model line (Introduced May-June of 1949), 500-600 series (Small cab like Chevrolet truck) has 4 grille bars. 700-800 series (Big cab, GMC only) has 5 grille bars (low-mount cab). 900 series (Big cab, GMC only) has 6 grille bars (high-mount cab). Three custom-built, experimental HDCW-954 (900 series) models were built by GMC in 1950-'51 (One of them tested by P.I.E.) that had an extra-high mount cab and extended hood to house a 6-110 engine. These unique models had 7 grille bars. The only engine available in the 900 series, 1940-1959, was the 6-71. I'll leave it at that... the other details you've mentioned would require another two or three paragraphs. -- Last edit: 2022-11-03 07:39:30 |
