Here are three other pictures of the Expy; however these are all I have run across so far:

officially added.

Actually the ’07 Expedition EL used in this film is in "Solid Black Clear Coat" color finish
(a factory available color on Limited Editions and other trim levels)
Its seen here all clean, polished and shiny:

What the special effects team did was coat the Expy in heavy amount of dirt and dust, in an effort
to make the brand new SUV look like it hasn’t been thoroughly cleaned in three years and as a result
all that dirt and dust on it, has accumulated within that time. They used the same technique used to
apply the dirt and dust on the Expedition EL on the other Abandoned Vehicles seen throughout the city ...

Did they have to lift the Expedition to get those Toyo M/T's on??? Anybody running them without a lift??? Or is this a tire size from Toyo that we haven't seen yet?? Anything is possible.....

If so, what lift did they use?? Usually the Limited Edition has "Air Suspension" and the only company out there at the moment (and correct me if I'm wrong) is Truxxx who makes a 3 inch lift for the Expedition. The only problem is, the Truxxx lift does not support an Expedition with Air Suspension. Now being the curious technical person that I am, I wanted to find out why this couldn't be done. Was it a physical barrier of the parts or was it a sensor barrier?? I called Truxxx and asked this very question. They told me they would love to do a lift on an Expedition with load leveling, however, Ford does not sell load leveling Expeditions to the Arizona region because the air bags crack very quickly due to the climate conditions. And this folks, is where Truxxx is based.

Now, not all hope is lost. He said that one of their mechanics installed a lift on a load leveling expedition, however, Truxxx would not guarantee that it work. If anybody has more to add, or how they did this in the movie, please chime in. More than likely, the guys who put these rigs together have worked on projects such as the Batmobile, so a 3inch lift would be a cakewalk for them.

Now, how about that grille guard with the winch that's tacked on for good looks. Well, after many hours of research, I finally found a company who makes a good looking grille guard that supports a winch, specifically for the 2007 Expedition. I would feel confident in its ability to take out zombies. Check out http://www.truckwinchmount.com/photos/index4.html The first photo is a white expedition with the stripped down model. I ordered the deluxe with the wires to protect the lights. It looks very nice!! I just installed the guard and I will post some photos. I am dropping in a 9.5ti Warn winch as well.

As for the safari basket, I have no clue what brand was used. However, here is a link to Surco, they have a nice setup. http://www.surcoinc.com/R-BR_SR5.html

I am moving out to the country, and I have to go through some thick forested roads where trees like to fall down. So having the ability to carry a chain saw up on top of my Expedition would be nice, along with some provisions if things get really nasty =O)

I would say no, given that the Expedition EL still possesses it’s factory ride height (If you compare the
I Am Legend Expedition [4WD] with a ordinary off-the-self Expedition [4WD] you will see that they are the same)
Also it is hard (not mention expensive) to lift a Expedition (post 2003 model) because of it’s unique and extremely
complex IRS system.

Indeed the Limited Editions come with a [Optional] Electromechanical Air controlled Suspension; therefore the
suspension can raise or lower itself in increments of inches.

Neptune,

Thanks for the reply. I went to go get tires today for my 07 Expedition. I wanted the 20inch Toyo M/T's, however, Les Schwab tires said that they wouldn't fit without doing some body trimming or modifications. Anybody running the Toyo M/T's on 20's???

Maybe i'm missing something here......

For now i'm sticking with the Toyo Open Country A/T's.

Cheers!

The only way to truly know how they (the special effects team) stuffed Toyo Open County M/T tires on 20" wheels
under a stock EL Limited would be to have someone who dealt with these Expeditions personally, someone who worked
with them on the set of the movie. All of the Expedition EL’s used in this film are special, in that they are one-offs.
Even the "Eddie Bauer" Expedition EL’s used in the Flashback scenes were custom made.

It shouldn’t be too terribly hard to find Off-Road Accessories like the Expedition EL wore in I Am Legend and make
your vehicle look like it. The financial investment would be the only thing I would worry about (I don’t know if
you’re ok in that area) All the Off-Road accessories appear to be standard off-the-self accessories that you can buy.
Your best bet would be to check with a local truck accessories shop (or whichever Off-Road Shop you prefer) and ask them
what’s best for your vehicle. Because the Chevrolet Tahoe is a completely different animal than the For Expedition, some
accessories (like the grille guards) may look slightly different in appearance than the ones used on the I Am Legend
Expedition EL, as most accessories are tailored specifically for different vehicles. Wheels and tires would be an unknown
area (I’m not sure if they would give any problems or not) just make sure to get the proper lug pattern for your vehicle
and make sure the tire size is the proper fit for the wheels. Tahoes, generally have a slightly lower ground clearance than
the Expedition (only by about an inch or two, this also depends on how the vehicle is equipped) so tire scrubbing might be
a problem. You may have to lift the vehicle ...

Good luck.

This is a 2007 Ford Expedition EL prototype off-road vehicle for ATS Design®

CarCurious92 UK

Quote

Hmm..
the ATS Design one, what's that one like?
It's good looking, the wheels seem a little cheap (no offence..) just the chrome/silver makes it look more ghetto than contemporary... but it could be just me being picky :P

I found a really good car importer based here in UK, www.americancarimports.com
I'm just wondering on the restrictions of US vehicles on UK roads, I know once Jeremy Clarkson mentioning on Top Gear about his Ford GT having issues with additional charges for congestion or something...
and I'm guessing the Expedition is bigger yet...
Although, I would definitely not like to be responsible for killing penguins in Antarctica, I wouldn't want to be charged through the nose on an LPG Conversion, or paying out thousands to raise the height and have the swanky Toyo Tires fitted, only to have the government slap some more charges in my face.

Anyway, my cousin is looking for his first car, I suggested getting something big, mean and classy that will last him forever... I'm sorry I said anything now, I should've left the professional suggestions to his driving instructor.
He wants a Lincoln Mark LT; Nice Truck, too big for his drive, too expensive for his parents, too cool for him :P

Well, I initially came here for help with the Expedition EL, I want to have a little more of a look into the Expy and see whether it could be occupying my drive in a few months time :)

The ATS Design Expedition EL is a one-off, the only one of its kind. ATS uses it as a showcase for
the accessories you see on it. Some of the off road accessories (like the Chrome Blade Roof Rack) are
prototypes.

If there is anything you wish to know about the Expedition or Expedition EL in general, I would be
glad to help. But if I may give you some sincere advice I wouldn’t recommend buying an Expedition if
you don’t plan on using it off road or at least using it for towing/hauling, which is what it’s
built for.

Oh, that sounds cool...
I think it's good, other than the paint job (I think it's the camo that puts me off..)
I like how the chrome roof rack is moulded and it all looks nice and fits in well with the mean machine :P

I would definitely be using it off-road, although would it be road-legal here with all the accessories added to it? (e.g. the tyres, grille guard etc.)

And, do you know anything on the rear bumper guard type of thing on the I Am Legend Expy?

I noticed in one shot it seems to have a metal bar along the rear bumper, not sure what the technical name for it is, but it looks like a rear bumper guard/bush guard type of thing....

Thanks,

As for a Expedition being road-legal in the UK with aftermarket modifications, I am
not sure. It would be best to ask someone who has more knowledge about
UK road regulations.

This one reveals three facts about the main character’s vehicle.

(A) It has chrome accented roof-racks (only available on Limited Editions)
(B) I think Wampa-One asked about the color? This photo shows the Expedition still has it’s factory color
(Solid Black Clear Coat) You can see its trying to reflect it’s surroundings thru the dirt and dust which
covers it.
(C) A good look at the Rear Quarter Glass panel reveals it still has it’s factory tint. The other Expedition
ELs used in the film have all of their tint removed.

It's amazing how many pieces of equipment, and vehicles/machinery they go through during their filming process.
I know they usually have different angles to perfect the director/whoever is in charge's view of the shot in their mind, and doing the whole crash scenes over and over until it's perfect would either mostly be CGI or they'd literally crash however many cars it takes until they have it perfect..?

Anyway, back to the tail lamp guards, what are they likely to be from? like, which company or style would I be looking at?
I saw a few, but the website can be deceitful, you never know how durable or which quality they'd be until they arrive, and could be disappointing or from a different material to the rear bumper guard...

Neptune US

The exact company from which the tail-lamps guards came is unknown. They appear generic at best, so any
company will suffice. The finish for all the off road gear the Expedition sported was "Gloss Black". As long
as all the accessories are ordered with the Gloss Black finish, they should not defer in appearance.

The standard DVD and Blu-ray DVD will be available March 18th. I read somewhere that the
HD-DVD (which is the one I want) won’t get here unit April 8th (!)

I may just get the standard DVD first – then later get the HD-DVD. April 8th is too long
for me to wait. I have no clue when it will be available in Europe – but I wouldn’t expect
it to be much longer.

I need to find me another I Am Legend novel – The one I have now is paper back and is all but falling apart.
I’ve seen where they made a new cover for the book with Will Smith on the cover.

I watched it yesterday ("unofficial" release of the DVD ), the movie was nice but like for "Omega Man" I preferred the first part where it was alone in the city rather than the second part with monsters etc.

It’s a Garvin Industries Wilderness Safari Rack

Hey everyone, im new to this forum but it was verrry helpful reading all of your posts. I have a 2005 Ford Explorer, and I loved what they did with the Expedition here in this movie, as do all of you. :) I did have a question about how they wired the lights up on the roof rack, and not just for show but functional in an all weather/terrain environment. Also, not that this is the right forum to ask it-- but anyone happen to know how to modify a spare tire swing arm jeeps have for a 2005 explorer?

Thanks!

Filmed at Washington Square. I don’t live very far from the Washington area. These are mainly just townhouses.

Can’t be a ’07. The scenes that used this Ford SUV in front of the homes were filmed in 2006. I say list it as 2006.

The '07 model was released in mid 2006 I guess, and if it was provided by Ford it could have been available even earlier.

Yes, exactly. New models get released about 6 months before the actual year. So for example, Ford probably has their 2009 models on sale right now or will have them soon enough. Same goes for the Mustang and the Escape.

I have a question for the user NEPTUNE.I have been browsing this website and have runacross lots of comments from NEPTUNE on mostly FORD cars, mostly the EXPEDITION. Do you expect me to believe you know all that stuff about the EXPEDITION just by research alone! I mean its obvious you know sensitive data about that vehicle (its inner workings and all that crap) I’ll get right to the point! You work for FORD MOTOR COMPANY don’t you??? Admit it! Don’t lie! Did you help design the EXPEDITION and maybe other FORD vehicles too?!

@ TexasCowboy: Sorry, I must have missed your comment. To answer the question, for sure no, I don’t work for Ford
(or any other car company for that matter) The information I give is not "sensitive" by any definition of the word, its public,
and can be found by anyone. Other information I give is also from personal experience or research.

Hypothetically, if I did work for Ford, it would be silly for me to post sensitive information about a vehicle (particularly if it was
still in development) in a public place, such as a public website. That would be leaking company information and I could loose my
job if the right person saw such activity.

You’re building a Expedition EL like the one in the film? You must have deep pockets ... :D

Post a picture when you’re done, I’d love to see the finished product. :)

I'm not going with black. I'm trying a red version with chrome accessories. The only thing I can't find is a chrome rear bumper/lights guard..... any ideas?

I'll definitely post a pic.

Thanks!

I’ll search around and see what I can find for you. I’m sure the rear tail-lamp guards and rear bumper guard are
available in chrome. But on the off chance they are not, you may have to order black ones and have them chromed.

I was thinking the same thing. Hopefully they're available stainless already. It costs a lot to have stuff chromed.

Sorry for late reply

The tires the Expedition EL was wearing were 33x12.50R20LT Toyo Tires® Open Country M/T™ (Mud Terrain) costing approx. $440 (US) per tire/tyre.
This price varies slightly depending on sales source.

They are an ultra high-performance off-road type tire, extremely aggressive in design. Its mainly used by off-road enthusiasts, and is only
available for certain vehicles with certain wheel sizes.
