I love these cars. So ahead of their time.

I agree with you, even if rotor engine hasn't be a success, this Ro80 design was 20 years ahead (think about the Passat II of the 90' for instance) :)

Mainly caused by the real unsympathic Ferdinand Piech, since he became the chief-developing-engineer. He only was interested to push his own developing, the 5-cylinder-engine into production. He hated the Wankel-technology and had no relations to the brand NSU.

@ingo: "...the real unsympathic Ferdinand Piech"- he's actually much worse than that, much worse than just disagreeable. One of my grandma's brothers was an engineer, first at NSU, later for Audi. During the 1970s, he was transferred to Ingolstadt for a couple of years where he became acquainted with Piech- who was feared by the entire staff in the development department. Although only in his thirties back then, he was arrogant and authoritarian towards everyone. He used to talk in a very low voice intentionally so everyone had to pay extra attention in order to be able to follow his thoughts. However, he must have liked my great-uncle because he borrowed him his then personal car a couple of times- a custom Scirocco, equipped with a Porsche-engine. When my great-uncle once headed for the factory-gates after work, the security staff there did not realize that it wasn't Piech behind the wheel ( I guess the car had tinted glass anyway); for them, it was just Piech's car arriving, so they did what they always did: Standing to attention, just like soldiers. One might say that guy is a bit mental.

I'm always very appreciate, that my car is one of the very few -maybe the only?- VW-models, which had no influence of any Piech- or Porsche-construction or development. This terrible guy is a reason for me, to boycott the whole brand.
